I would be very upset if this was my car. 4,000 miles on a very expensive auto shouldn't need a motor and can see how you would be very upset. Personally I lease and still would be upset as I didn't buy a pre owned one and now you are getting a recon motor with no history and some technician at a BMW dealer taking the auto apart and then reassembling it. You may get lucky and get someone who knows what they are doing taking it all apart but only time will tell. When the auto was made it was assembled in the factory with a specialist who just does that all day long. I am sure you could ask what the history on the motor was but I doubt you will find out the whole story as it might have several parts from many motors. They may be following the warranty but with that new of an auto I wouldn't expect this kind of issue and seems like maybe a bigger problem with the the few who have had the same issue . I would really push to get them to buy it back or at least get them to do a swap into a new one. However I was just reading another post that production is haulted for some engineering thing. If you are the kind of person who holds the car to it dies you will be fine with value as it won't mater. However if you sell or try to sell it in the next year or two good luck even with an extended warranty. I would question why such a new car with such low miles would need a new motor so soon. You will sell it but it will be way below value. As other have said work with BMW and see if they will help you get out of this car. I would also get an attorney to see what the lemon law is in your state as well as the Magnuson Moss federal law. Best of luck and stay firm and let us know the outcome. I would really think BMW would do something on good faith to keep you in the family.

Curious what dealership in NJ are you dealing with? If it the one on Tenafly then I have an old friend there who is a manager in new car sales I can talk to for you.

There is no reason that they shouldn't be able to place a brand new engine in your car. A refurbished engine will come up on your carfax when selling your car down the line (Work done at BMW Dealerships are very detailed on carfax reports for some reason.)

Even a new faulty engine replaced with another new one will dent resale value if a buyer sees in on the carfax.

Another key argument is defining their terms of "refurbished". Best case is it can just mean a new engine that was never used or installed. Worse case is it was pulled from a wrecked car with 10k+ miles and refurbished (with new moving parts) to factory specification.

i understand BMW Dealership Customer Service can be messy and ignorant (not by their fault) but get the full info so you can act accordingly. I work in Litigation btw. lol

Received a call the on Tuesday that the tech found a major issue and had to call BMW technical service and was told they need to replace the motor. When I asked if this will be a brand new motor I was told that the motor is not new but remanufatured and I should be happy with that and couldn’t see why I was upset as it is the same as new. Keep in mind this is a automobile I purschased and not leased. I called BMW 800 number and they opened a case and was told a case manager would be in touch in 24 hours and they were but missed the call and was told they would look into it fully. Well later that day I missed a call from my dealer and had to track down who called. After speaking to the dealer I was told BMW will do nothing and that Is the final outcome. I haven’t received the official work from BMW but was told from dealer it was. Am I being unreasonable for being upset as who knows if this new motor will effect resale or even will it ever be like it should have been new from the factory. When I placed the complaint with BMW I was asked what would be a suitable outcome for me so I asked for a buyback or a switch for the same exact spect car being mine only has 4K miles on it. Am I being unrealistic or am I making a bigger deal of this than I should your feedback either agreeing or not would be very helpful.

I was very excited about buying a new BMW and have been looking at them for quite a while. A friend suggested I do more research and directed me to these forums. Coming across this makes me hesitate to buy now. I would be very upset if a car I spent close to $90K on had needed an engine replaced after 4000 miles and very unhappy with the decision to replace with what is not a like-kind replacement. Thank you for sharing your experiences as I have never spent this much on a car before and am going to think this over more carefully before I decide to move forward with BMW.

That is why I will wait for the LCI version (2-3 years). I been buying BMWs since 2004 and the first production years of new models always seem to have kinks in build and drive quality that eventually get sorted out in the later LCI editions!

Engine replacement is one thing but replacing a new faulty engine with an old refurbished one on what is still a new car is a CRIME!

Waiting for the LCI sometimes doesn't work because BMW may change the engine for the LCI... For example, the M550i is expected to get a new version of the V8 engine with many changes, so what do you do then? Wait a couple more years? Then it gets close to the end of the model, and the next car will have yet another engine...

Yeah you are right. LOL!

My 2011 335i N55 engine is the perfect example of this. The 2009 355i N54 LCI came with many "lemon" issues during the first 2 LCI (2009/2010) production years. So much so that you have a better chance of driving past a unicorn on the road than a used 2009 or 2010 335i in 2018.

Funny fact on the E60 5 series the v10 on the M5 E60 was more reliable than the v8 engines on the 545i/550i.

Since the G30 550i and F90 M5 basically share the same 4.4 L V8 twin-turbo engine base (N63B44O2 versus S63B44T4) I wonder how reliability will play out in the long term between the two applications.

I have been reassured the tech that worked on my car is tops well I went down the road to look at another brand of cars and they pop the hood. Guess what the hood doesn’t close so I had to go back to the BMW to have them adjust. I asked the tech are you the one who replaced the motor and he said he was. I said I am getting the shaft And he agreed and said I would be angry as well.

Then the call from BMW rep who was handling my complaint comes at 1pm on Thursday and I miss her by minutes so I called right back. I never recieved a call back from her so I left another message 4 hours later that day. Still no calls back so on Friday at 10am I left another message saying I would like to speak about resolution. No calls back to yesterday(2 days later)at 2:30 eastern and was offered a lease payment or extended warranty. The funny thing and my main complaint was I was going to have dramatic decreased in value with a new motor. I reminded her I bought the car so not sure how paying a lease payment was going to help so was just a canned answer. Regarding a warranty doesn’t do me any good as I keep my cars 2-3 Years. Needles to say BMW doesn’t care one bit about their customers. If they did they would have done right being I bought it and only had 4,340miles on it and gotten me into a new one and not shifted the dramatic loss to me the consumer. Such a shame as This BMW was such an awesome machine to all this happened leaving such a bad taste in my mouth as they way they handled it with the customer service experience not even listening to me. As others have said make sure you lease and not buy otherwise get ready to take a big hit personally if this happens to you.
For what its worth, if you purchased the car BMW will calculate what a lease payment would be and give you that. At least that is my experience.

Leasing is the way to go with these cars.

So, all the bad stuff aside, how does the rebuilt engine run? You have a break-in period, but does it feel like the original so far?

+1 and it is sad to see 550s are STILL having issues.

My lease on the F10 (which has been absolutely trouble free) is up next year and I will most likely go with a 540 and not worry about any of this.

I would loose my #$^%& if a brand new car that I bought needs a new engine yet alone being replaced by a used one.

To be clear, "55Os STILL are having issues" appears based on ONE or TWO posts here.

Using this forum as a source for empirical data is less than ideal. It is just as possible 540 engines have similar fail rates, just not reported here. If we base it on all posts here, these cars are practically foolproof - statistically.

Took almost 4 weeks, but everything was covered under warranty. 52k kilometers old engine... the bill for BMW was insane, ~23k USD / ~20k EUR

Now I’m just affraid this will happen again, but car won’t be under warranty anymore... damn

Reading a thread 18 months later can be entertaining. Amazing how many people kept posting what he should do after he posted that it had already been fixed. And missed the fact that it was a leased car.

bojler, good luck with yours.
