With the new M3 now out, I think this IS will sell pretty well (relative to sedan sales).

If you're in the market for a daily driver that's fast, and won't be on the track, instead of buying an M3 for $80k, why not the IS500 w/ $10-$20k saved?

If you're going manual then I understand buying the M3, but if you're going auto + DD, I'd opt for the Lexus + snow tires.

Thoughts from you auto M3 buyers?

I think the M3 will sell very well especially once the AWD version is out.

IS500 will be a nice option IF Lexus prices it aggressively. Typically the performance versions are overpriced and have horrible lease deals. Lexus also doesn’t offer you to do custom build like most enthusiasts prefer to get the exact color combo/options.

I personally hope IND or another company can make a normal grill alternative that will have more traditional styling.

I highly doubt there will be many M3 owners jumping ship for a Lexus. A lot of us started off with the Lexus platform. The main reason why a lot of us jumped ship is that we want a car that is more sport-oriented car, which Lexus lacked.

If I am in the market for a daily driver that is fast and I want the best bang for the buck. The IS500 would not be on the top of the list. A Charger Scatpack for 40k would be significantly cheaper than Lexus and a lot quicker.

That's not hard to figure out. 395tq compared to bigger displacement V8s pushing more like 450tq. Then RWD vs. AWD with the engine up front and it probably doesn't have 315s in the back.

Yes most people base things solely on stopped 0-60 and stoplight-to-stoplight speed. This is probably not a car for those people.

Exactly. Also, I'll bet that those numbers are conservative. Lexus quoted the original ISF as a 4.6 or 4.7 second 0-60 but magazines and people on forums consistently got into the low 4's.

I think it will sell just fine probably better than expectations if they keep starting price around $58k-60k. We are headed towards all electric vehicles this combo of compact luxury sedan + RWD + NA V8 will be classics in the future. Lexus reliability is just icing on the cake.

This is competing against the M340i, C43, S4 segment so I think it stacks up very well against them.

You couldn’t pay me to drive a charger lol

The rear seat room is the only thing holding this car back in my opinion. IS has always had a stupid back seat.

I wonder if having the IS with the V8 has any impact in GS F residuals... That car was over priced and unfortunately didn't sell well but it had the right size back seat.

Coming from a manual F80 M3, I am all over the IS500. But my M3 was used exclusively as a street car, and so would the Lexus if I bought one. I am also not a Lexus fan in general, although my wife won't drive anything but an RX. Her car I guess

If the IS500's performance is accessible enough on the street, meaning no constant traction control intervention like my M3, then this car is a home run for me. It's the most interesting and standout car in its segment, whether someone is interested in what it offers or not.

Although I definitely agree with R N M, the fact that you can't really get a committed special order is garbage. But I guess when you're Toyota, you run the show.

I doubt it will have issues with traction in daily use. The RC-F does just fine although it has a torque vectoring LCD whereas this (I believe) has only a standard rear diff.

Unfortunately, I think it has more to do with the traction control programming than the mechanical grip. F80 TC was wayy too aggressive, even in MDM, even on RE-71Rs with stock tune, and turning TC off on public streets regularly in my opinion is irresponsible and unsafe for a car with as much power as the M3. At least with my comfort level anyways.

My neighbor's AMG GT-C by comparison has over 100+ more hp/torque and barely even breaks a sweat under WOT. It's a much more expensive car, but software is something that even Americans in their 40k Mustangs and Camaros get right. No excuses in my opinion. Just hope Lexus gets it right with this one.

Lexus just updated their press release.

https://pressroom.lexus.com/2022-lex...dan-unleashed/

Quote:
IS 500 uses the same eight-speed Sport Direct Shift automatic transmission with lockup torque converter found in the RC F. It also features drive mode select Sport S and Sport S+ found in the IS 350 F SPORT, which provides advanced engine and transmission mapping to enhance performance. In addition, Sport S+ adjusts the amount of EPS steering assist and damping force to deliver sportier handling to match the updated powertrain settings. Custom Mode is also available, offering multiple combinations for powertrain (Normal/Eco/Power), chassis (Normal/Sport) and air conditioner (Normal/Eco).

Are you talking about on the twisties or WOT traction? I have no issues with Michelin SS on stock tune, stage 1, and stage 2 tune. I started having minor slippage with E30 ~530WHP and a lot of traction issues with full E85 ~600WHP.

Have you considered having Euro MDM coded? I heard it is a big difference from stock MDM.

Maybe so, but I sold my M3 last year so I've moved on. Even on RE-71Rs on stock tune, the TC intervention was just too annoying for me when accelerating.

As for my driving style, I don't get enjoyment out of throttle modulation or gradual tip in. My foot is a hammer and I want grip when I want it. Other RWD cars with similar power are much less fussy and intrusive with the TC programming, so it's not a matter of mechanical grip. The few times I did disable TC completely, the car behaved exactly like I wanted it to, but I was not about to drive with TC off all the time on public roads, which is where I used the car exclusively.

Introducing the Lexus IS 500 Launch Edition

https://pressroom.lexus.com/2022-lex...f-distinction/

Quote:
  • 5.0L V8 delivers 472 hp and 395 lb.-ft. of torque
  • Exclusive Incognito – All-new to the Lexus color palette
  • Unique two-tone Black & Gray Ultrasuede® trimmed seats, door accents, and center console
  • 19-inch seven-spoke forged alloy Matte Black BBS® wheels
  • Unique serialized Launch Edition badge included

SEBRING, Fla. (March 19, 2021) – Hot on the heels of last month’s IS 500 F SPORT Performance world premiere, Lexus is proud to unveil the 2022 IS 500 F SPORT Performance Launch Edition. Only 500 serialized vehicles will be produced, and it will be sold exclusively in North America.

The IS 500 Launch Edition will be powered by the same naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine introduced in the standard IS 500. Generating 472 hp at 7,100 rpm and 395 lb.-ft of peak torque at 4,800 rpm, this engine offers the linear acceleration and V8 muscle that driving enthusiasts crave. However, buyers that desire additional distinction will find numerous interior and exterior enhancements in the IS 500 Launch Edition.

Standing apart from the standard IS 500, the 2022 IS 500 Launch Edition interior builds upon Takumi craftsmanship with elevated interior materials, including sporty two-tone Black & Gray Ultrasuede® trimmed front and rear seats, door accents, and center console. Additionally, the heated leather-wrapped steering wheel receives unique silver ash wood treatment with black F SPORT Performance badging, and the interior will be appointed with a serialized Launch Edition badge to further highlight the vehicle’s exclusivity. Moreover, the F SPORT combination instrumentation meter has been updated with an exclusive Launch Edition startup animation to further set this model apart from the standard IS 500.

Outside, the IS 500 Launch Edition is sure to turn heads with standard 19-inch split-seven-spoke forged alloy Matte Black BBS® wheels from the IS F SPORT Dynamic Handling Package. Not only are they impressive looking, the 19-inch BBS® wheels are approximately 4 pounds lighter per wheel compared to the standard 19-inch IS F SPORT wheel. The vehicle will be sold exclusively in Incognito, an all-new color for the Lexus lineup.

More information regarding MSRP and available options will be made available closer to launch. The 2022 IS 500 F SPORT Performance and IS 500 F SPORT Performance Launch Edition are expected to arrive in dealerships later this Fall.

So basically a Nardo Grey version with some alcantara interior bits...I wonder how much of a premium they'll slap on this?

Just a mark up edition. They can keep the alcantara I don't like that stuff.

Can't wait till this car releases this fall. I'm ready to move on from my F80 comp. Looking forward to a less edgy ride and more special engine. This car ticks all the boxes hopefully at the right price!
