UK ordering: Decision Looming, order 540 or wait ?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi folks,

Need some help on this....

I'm poised to get a G30 next year. Do I go for the 540i M Sport ? Or wait for an M performance model assuming the UK will ever get one ? I'm done with diesels now, and the gov't here is beginning to turn against them - slowly.

Has anyone heard either way ? The dealers and BMW UK won't say anything or just simple don't know!!!!

Thanks :-)

I have the 540i M Sport XDrive on order for March 2018, I am having the "M" Performance Kit fitted on Pick-up.
Coming from M5 M6 and this M3 CP, I think it will be quick enough for real world UK driving, there will be no other "M" cars between M3/4/5/6 and this one.
Unless you want "X"M ...3 ..4..5.

Thanks for that
Can I see your spec pls ? Curious about which colour you've gone for ? I'm keen on moonstone
And yes I'm pretty leaning towards the 540 with a full M perf body kit on it. I went to see a model with all the kit on including the carbon fibre read splitter, it's looked incredible!!!
Congrats on the order btw
I'll be going from a x5 M50d so it will be a much quicker car to have anyway.

I have gone Bluestone with Ivory NAPPA full leather fully specced .
The X550D will not be quicker than the 540i MS. By the way my "M performance upgrade will be engine torque converter and exhaust with new ECU, upping the power.
Not a body kit.
I have driven the X5 50D and did not find it that quick TBH.

Here are the stats for the new X5 50D.
The engine characteristics make for spontaneous dynamics with its 740 Nm of torque, a peak output of 280 kW (381 hp) and acceleration from 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds. With average fuel consumption of 43mpg and CO2 emissions of 173 g/km, the BMW X5 M50d produces an outstanding dynamics-to-efficiency ratio.

STD the 540i is 4.8 to 62, with performance kit 4.6 secs.

Exactly, totally agree
I've had the M50d for 3 years and doesn't compare to the to the rapid response of the 340/440/540 etc
Aside from the numbers, and not wanting to state the obvious, the two engines are very different and will appeal to very different consumers

Interesting move by bmw Uk to draw the line with petrol at the 540 level, apart from the M5. I'm so far very surprised no M550 here. In the past we have had V8 petrol models across different ranges and they're not volume sellers but the interest is always there. The buyers of these cars usually aren't deterred by VED or co2 crap

Wasn’t the reason given (probably unofficial) that a 550i would steal sales from the M5?

No idea how many f10 550is were sold but sure you could probably count them with your fingers and toes!

In answer to the original question go for the 540 as it is a superb car. Get a test drive in one and take the opportunity to look at colours in the metal. I have bluestone and this colour is not reproduced accurately in the catalogue or some photos for that matter so see it for real to make your decision. Looks good with an ivory interior.

I think anyone in the UK looking at the 550i would be able to extend to the M5.

The only obvious hole in the range I feel is that in Germany you can get the 540d and M550d already in both bodies and I think eventually the M550i might be available in a Touring which might sell in small numbers as there is no M5 Touring.

Of course there is the Alpina B5 both in Saloon and Touring and currently the D5s only in Saloon but you might be able to get the D5s in a Touring eventually

I saw an F11 550i Touring in Japanese auctions once, was keen but it wasn't the right timing for me. It was also a 300kw N63, not a 331kw version.

On how many left from 2010 through to now, the numbers are as below in the UK

Unfortunately it doesn't clearly show if an E60/61 was unregistered one year, then registered again the next year, but it looks as if there might be about:

F07: 5
F10: 89
F11: 5

Guy in our street has an F10 550, not badged as "M550" though.

I only noticed this after my G30 M550i arrived so I'm secretly feeling rather smug as he's an a** who never respects the speed limit in our little side-street....

Don't see many 550s of any age mind you, although strangely there's a total of three in our village. Must be where they come and meet.

In the F10, the 550i was part of the standard F10 range, in the G30 as you know, it gets the "M" because its part of that intermediate range between standard G30 and the full ///M, with some exclusive M parts.
