Back-up camera stopped working
Just get a black area of the screen where it previously showed the rear video feed. Sensors still work; also noticed when you open the trunk, it doesn't show the "trunk open" screen. It also does not retain settings for brightness or contrast. Seems it is completely disconnected from the car.
Any thoughts? Maybe something is unplugged? ^^ Update: Went out to have a word with it; my intent was to remove the trunk lining and maybe unplug/plug it back in.. but now the damned thing is working again.

looks like your Idrive software is acting up... I had my backup camera stop work a few times and my idrive locked up. I had BMW do the latest Istep update and I haven't had those issues since.

Happens to me about twice a week..... only fix is: Stop car, lock it... open a start again... all good, YMMV

Speedo/Tach Display going black
I've noticed last couple weeks my speedo/tach display intermittently going haywire. Yesterday afternoon the display went black altogether (while driving), then came back on after maybe 5 mins. Happened again this morning. Simultaneously heard a faint "whirring" noise, like the sound the seatbelt pretentioners make. Strange. Anyone experiencing the same?

Haven't had any cluster issues, though my iDrive did reboot itself the other day. Camera has been pretty stable, so unless it becomes completely problematic, I will wait for the upcoming oil change and have them upgrade the software to the latest I-step.

700 miles on 2018 540i xDrive: backup camera is failing daily. Stopping/locking car for a while seems to "fix" it. Anybody have news on this?
BMW Genius didn't have any useful information: "shouldn't happen too often." |

My list right now: -Oil change -Update vehicle software to hopefully fix backup camera going out. Hopefully this also fixes the odd bluetooth phone issue where it's a loud crack across the entire sound system, then audio comes in. -Find out why my coolant reservoir was bone dry -Find out why the car stalled on me (only once) -Find out why the active vents are no longer active, just open 24/7

a simple experience
Hi,
I just got a simple experience of X3 rear view camera trouble. I drove to the dealer and the technician just opened the back door and forcefully closed it, troubleshoot. Mentioned here just give a clue may help some one. Adam |

Have a July 2017 540 and had this problem twice in a year. Car has been updated with s15a 18 07 540 recently and issue not seen since although I think far too soon to be conclusive about this.
All I can suggest is report it to the dealer as it's under warranty and also so they have a record of it. That way should the problem persist past end of warranty they have a record and I would like to think goodwill will kick in should that be necessary. A flash of the latest I step may fix it potentially, took about 2 hours or so to do on my car. |

Not many parts involved. Camera HSD cable (multi pin cable between camera and module) Camera module Harness from module that connects to +12v, canbus and video signaling to back of idrive. Dealer can connect to ISTA and run diagnostics. Quite often problem is camera or HSD cable.

Since my I step update (see previous reply up above ) it has reoccurred once.
So that 3 times in 10000 miles , twice before the instep update and once afterwards |

G30 Reverse cam blackout
Yes, it's intermittent. I've done 14k mi and this happened around 10 times. Any way as my first oil change/service is due, i'm asking BMW to check this again next week.

does your hatch have a soft close feature? I would hope that one would not have to slam a door/hatch with a soft close feature.

There was a TSB for this, it's a software compatibility issues between the camera module and the head unit I believe. Hope it gets resolved for you.

Anyone have a copy or number for the TSB on this? I had it happen yesterday for the first time. After a while (or a couple of ignition cycles) it seems to be working OK again, just as others have described. I will keep an eye on it and if it happens a couple more time I will head for my dealer.--Bob

I don't unfortunately, not coming up easily in Google earlier. I ended up paying for access to the site (BMW's site, like $30 for X days). I can't even find that site anymore, but it's out there. The dealer can look; it's a software issue.

Rear view camera issue more complicated than it seems
First, I am happy to read these posts --- after submitting my pre-notice letter under the Lemon Law and for litigation, I wasn't sure if this was just isolated to me vehicle. That is, BMW wrote back that no one else has reported this issue. (Go figure, of course no one has ).
ON my G30, I've brought my vehicle in 5 times under warranty to address his issue (and twice they supposedly fixed the software issue). After the 6th time of it failing and 79 days in BMW with BMW trying to fix/understand the problem, I am moving towards going the legal route. What sucks is that its not worth it for me to go through the Lemon Law because the aftermarket products (OEM) I've installed doesn't make a repurchase or replacement favorable. So seeing that I am not the only having the same exact problem makes a difference. |

Rear view camera issue more complicated than it seems
And -- In addition to the updated software, I had the harness/cables changed out while supervised by one of BMW's regional technician (sic) and my camera still shut down sometime later.
Problem generally occurs after opening and closing the trunk so one of the mechanics thinks it might be a design/mechanical issue. Who knows? |
