Over use of E Brake ?

I'm constantly using E Brake at red lights to avoid stomping on the brake for 2 or 3 minutes. Literally this is the first car i've had with an electronic E Brake toggle switch. Is there any evidence doing this too much can damage the rotors or pads ?

Doesn't the car have the auto hold function for this purpose? I don't remember the last time I used an e-brake.

I have no idea what "Auto Hold" is. But my 2020 M550 will roll without braking at lights.

My 2018 540i has Auto Hold, which automatically holds the brakes on when stopped at a traffic signal. Check your manual for that feature.

Thanks! I will definitely check it out. Maybe it's disabled on my car for whatever reason. But I know for sure that if I stop at a light and let my foot off brake, it rolls fwd.

It's the "Auto H" button under the parking brake...

You have to turn on Auth Hold (Auto H).

It is a toggle below the parking brake lever.

The auto highbeams is the button below BC on the turn signal (if you have it)

I had no idea that's what that button is. So I just press it, and then when I hit the gas it goes back off?

Yes. When you turn it on it remains on unless you turn it off.

Ran an errand tonight and tried it out. Pretty cool. This forum comes in handy over and over. Great decision number one was buying a BMW. Great decision number two was joining this forum. If I had anything to do over, I'd have reversed order and joined the forum first.

If I am not using ACC Stop and Go, I use Auto Hold in bumper to bumper traffic or creeping up hill in bumper to bumper traffic. This allows me to just use the gas pedal to move forward or release the gas pedal to brake. I don't see any long term issues, it is simply an automated system for hitting the brake, the same as I would if it was off. Mark, not sure if this is what you are referring to with "E Brake". The parking brake is electronic and is the button above Auto H as explained in the video. Personally, I never see a need to engage it. If it was a 6-speed manual, maybe.

It's very useful. These cars if equipped have so many driver assistance functions that are so useful if you remember to use them. I suspect many people don't. When you shut down the car and restart, it defaults back to off.

I'll try again today to confirm, but last night mine did not default back to off when I shut it down and restarted. The auto hold function remained on.

Confirmed - the auto hold did not default back to off. It was still on this morning when I cranked it up.

This is how Auto H works.

It keeps it enabled until you disable it. Which is good as the button location is inconvenient if you needed to toggle it at the start of every drive.

My experience with autohold is that when I first tried it, I hated it. But after I kept it for a week, I don't want to drive without it.

Here's another vid from BMW on Auto H. It actually applies the Emergency Brake after you let your foot off the brake once stopped, then releases it once you hit the gas pedal. Pretty slick.

I can’t watch the video currently, but it works a bit differently and you can confirm this if you like.

With Auto H enabled you’ll see a green Auto H in the cluster. Once you stop you’ll see a green BRAKE in the cluster. This means it is using your normal brakes to hold the car in place. If you activate the parking brake manually you’ll see a red BRAKE in the cluster and you’ll hear the car switch to the parking brake if your windows are down.

In both cases it will disengage the activated brake when you hit the gas with Auto H enabled.

Hmmm....I am probably mistaken then. It's rare that a BMW remembers something like this without coding. Thanks for confirming!

Yeah I was about to say the same thing . I have the 22 530i with the auto hold on it. I do not use it really but it is there.
