I am a dinosaur in this world, don't own a cell phone. I'm typically in 2 places most days, work and home and a phone is at both. The wife has one for work and family but that's it.

I've found it's incredibly liberating to leave your phone at home every once and awhile. You guys should try it.

I can relate to this. Every summer we have a big family reunion at a lake resort, a traditional for over fifty years. When we were kids we played in the water, went boating, hiking, and ran around like maniacs. Now all the kids just sit on the grass and play with their phones. The biggest issue is everyone (including adults) needs to charge their phone constantly, or they need to run to the nearest Apple store for a new charger (an hour away). So out in this beautiful scenery it's a constant battle of who gets to charge their phone next. Sometimes I wonder why did we come here?

My best tech purchase was upgrading to an Apple Watch with cellular service. The phone stays at home except for working hours, and the watch can't do much more than an old flip phone can without being tethered to the phone.....

You are in the DMV what are you supposed to do, talk to the lady with her screaming kids who are sitting next to you?
I was there recently and yes I was on my phone, but I was responding to work e-mails while waiting. I figured it was a good way to get something done. I do agree about the cell phones though, people use it as a defense mechanism to avoid interaction with others around them. Watch any line in a store with more than one person waiting. As soon as the next person shows up in line, phones come out. I always laugh when I'm out to dinner with someone and look over to see a family or couple who are sitting at a table but all of them are on their phones.

I use my cell only to communicate with my wife.
at work i barely use it only to call wife. i dont have FB or instagram at home: i limit the use so i can interact with my kids & wife. (3yr old son that drains every bit of energy lol) (8th old month princess ) if the kids are playing i sometimes check my phone while im watching them.. wife is busy with making dinner, prepping up bottles etc. dinner time no cellphones when the kids go to sleep which is between 8-9pm, we use our phones and chit chat then we play and go to sleep... my son has limit time on phone, under 20 mins. |

Up until about a year ago, a handful of friends of mine always met at my house after work on Mondays around 5:00 p.m. for "Monday Decompression." The rules were: alcohol was to continue flowing until we were "comfy" (we're all adults and know our limits - no one was ever allowed to leave/drive until they were comfortable doing so) and no cell phones. We all bitched about our day, bosses, general bullshit and gave each other complete hell until around 7:00. This was a tradition that lasted for years. We all have become very busy with relationships, wives, husbands, the gym and yoga since then, so we rarely meet up anymore.
The big thing though was no cell phones. We were adamant about it. We are all victims to society and the offerings of technology. I agree with every post made in this thread so far, but with everything; there are those that use the technology for it's intended use and those that become addicted and over-use. Being mindful of your usage and to those around you that are so inundated with it is key. Parents need to be parents and monitor usage for their kids. The problem is the parents who are so addicted that their phone supersedes their role as a parent. |

I go to gym - phone stays in the car
I go to the cabin, cell barely works and only for weather reports I don't know HOW I would ever get anywhere driving these days without Waze/Maps though, but it drives me into a complete fury if the F!@#$ things is off by 5 feet and I can't get directions. |

I try to discretely check my watch to see what the notification was that arrived on my phone - 99% I can disregard (emails, crap from other apps, texts etc.) but occasionally I get an alert I have to look at. Would be nice to be one of those people who can just put their phone away and ignore it, but in my role at work I just can't do that - yet. |

Also dislike the ignorant ass who watched an action movie up really loud on his cell phone in the doctors office waiting room full of people. Such a selfish jerk. |

Lol........you and I sound alike although we are empty nesters. When I get home from work, the phone goes on "do not disturb" except for a few family members....and a few state and federal agencies including the Homeland of Defense that I have to take if they call due to the nature of the stuff we make at work. But if they call.....I know it's serious.

im on my phones pretty much from the moment i wake up to the moment i go to bed.
Between work, social media, news and porn, there is always something to keep me busy. This thread is ironic though because it is a thread started because people were glued to their phones and not the TV. Funny what the older people get upset about. To add, before smart phones were so affordable and capable, i would be on a laptop doing the same things i do on my phone a majority of the day. The phone has made it so much easier to be productive and efficient with what im doing.

Aha so this is where the old men yelling at clouds are hanging out
When i am king there will be one simple rule on public cell phone usage - taking a call on speaker or FaceTime, or playing loud videos in public places entitles anyone within earshot to pluck the phone out of your hand and hurl it as far as they can in the direction of their choosing. |

Early 40s
I check my phone when i get bored but not too often. Unless its transfer season for the EPL! I dont do ANY social media stuff. No FB, instagram, etc. None. Don't let my kids take any tablet when we go outside home. They can use it a bit at home but outside is for us going to do stuff and they need to engage. I see some other kids at restaurants using and it's crazy (epsecially asian kids - i think we've found their kryptonite!). Another pet peeve is people recording everything. They are missing the show and will never watch that stupid recording again. |
