G30 1.6L 520i !!!! Anyone knows what's this

Dears

Due to unknown reasons, BMW Egypt is offering only ONE variety of the LCI 2021 5er!!! and that is a 1.6L 170hp engine (used to be for the 118i few years ago) and no other variant available

What's this special 520i is all about? it reminds me of the MB W213 E180 that was sold here in Egypt till 2019.

Very strange indeed! Usually they do this for reasons of local taxation. Probably a 2.0 is prone for excessive extra charges?

When it's a 1.6 with 170hp it might still be the peugeot sourced engine they used in the F20 before the LCI for the 118i?

They used to do that in the past due to customs rates on the 2.0L
Since 2019 and there's zero customs on all European cars ; that's why it's really strange of them to do so

And I guess the 170hp is not the N20 (it was 136hp)

I guess it's the 1.6 N13, which came in 170hp/250Nm guise in the 118i. I don't remember BMW using a more modern engine with this output with only 1.6l displacement. So, a BMW 5-series with the engine of a peugeot 207. Not a thrilling thought I must say.

520i in Turkey is the same 170HP engine. It's B48 2.0 BMW block. Only pistons and etc. changed to reduce the volume to 1.6 for tax reasons. I'm using it over a year.

So it's a B48! What a surprise! How does it drive?

Since both engines use the same turbo and lots of other common parts it can not fill the turbo until 2.500rpm and accelerating from 0km/h is a total torture But after 3.000rpm it's quite agile

That's bad luck: turbo threshold at low rpm's and only 170hp. Doesn't fit with the chracater of the 5-series either. Should at least have some torque as from the go. Sorry to hear this.

Considering the total tax rate of 300% for even a 1.6lt engine you may imagine the price of 1.6+ 2.0+ and 3.0+ vehicles in here

1.6lt 5.20 entry level (no optional equipment) M visual package (standard options are: 18rims, digital dash and iD7, harman kardon, adaptive LED) is being sold for €94.000

Same car with 2.0lt engine (5.30) price is: €142.105

And same 300% tax applies to all optional packages

Finally minimum wage rate in country is: €245.....

Wow! When I try to digest all of this, I would conclude that you better buy a renault talisman 1.3 160hp instead of a 5 series. It will not be as robust and reliable, but the drive should not be too far of and you'll probably keep a pile of banknotes in your wallet!

Will you pay €52.500+ for a 1.3 Renault?
