2022 M550i - installing M5 exhaust and diffuser

Hey All - sorry for yet another posting about "should I install exhaust x,y or z".

I love my M550 and I also love it's Clark Kent look. But i want to add just a tiny bit of bling - namely the rear diffuser and exhaust from an M5.- that to my eye, looks fantastic and adds just the right amount of differentiation. Whether or not i add a lot of horsepower is less important to me than the more aggressive look, and the idea that no other 550 will look exactly like mine.

My first question is: why would one choose cat-back or axle-back - what are the pros/cons ? One of the downsides that I'd really like to avoid is a drone in the cabin at highway speed. More exhaust note in sport mode and under throttle is cool, but no filling-loosening drone. I should add that I've never driven an M5 so I don't know if my question is silly.

I’d like to use BMW parts for this, and maybe find a BMW dealer willing to do the install too. I live in Central Arkansas and there's only one dealer in Little Rock. They've told me that it can't be done but i don't believe them - more likely that they weren't interested in messing with something semi-custom.

Anybody have a recommendation on a good shop in Houston or Dallas that'd do this? Feedback on my idea ? good/bad ? I don't want to run afoul of the warranty and i don't want to lessen the life of this motor - I'm thinking this might be my last gas powered vehicle.

I think you are going to have a tough time fitting the M5 exhaust to the M550. If the look is your thing and not so much sound (BTW, the M5 exhaust sucks in terms of sound) then I would suggest the Dinan option. It look fantastic and sounds tastefully engineered. I went with a full Catback. Why? Hell, do it right or don't do it at all. Alternative options were to keep the stock mid pipe with resonators (which is just stupid bolting that on the Dinan axle-back) or chopping off the resonators and welding. I wanted a beautiful end to end system with no ugly chop and welds, plus the Dinan midpipe gives you a few more HP and goes with the axle-back.

Hey JOE-BMW33 - i hope you don't mind a couple questions. Your car looks great BTW, i love Carbon Black.

First - I couldn't find a cat-back option on the Dinan website for a 2022 M550 where does one go to figure out the cost ? Also, do you get any drone at all in the cabin ? I know the exhaust note is louder outside of course, but wondering how the sound changes inside the car. Does the Dinan fit with the factory diffuser ? If not, where'd you find yours ?

Thanks!

Agree with what's already been said. If it's the look you want just get quad tips welded on. M5s sound rubbish no matter what you do due to the exhaust manifold paring cross-banks.

I am 99% sure the axle back and the mid pipe fit 2022. Call them or email. I know a few people who went that route with 2022.

No drone at all. The cabin is well insulated so you can hear a change but nothing overwhelming. Hope this helps.

Actually, it’s right here, even says for 2022.

Nope, not painted. It is gloss black. I got it off ebay. I don't usually put non-OEM stuff on my car, but the options are limited for an M550 diffuser that will fit 4" tips. I am pretty sure this is one of maybe two that fit. I figured, hell, it is cheap enough. If I didn't like the look or the quality, it is almost disposable for the money. Luckily, I really like it and it has held up well.

Car looks great with this setup. Did you have any issues fitting stock tips in this diffuser? Do the Dinan tips protrude much more than the stock tips as I was considering the upgrade as well but can't tell from the angle of your picture. Do you have any other pictures?

Thanks for the kind words. No issues at all with this diffuser, fits like a glove, but there are only a few diffusers out there that will fit 4" double rounds, this is one of the reasons I went with this one. Also fits the stock trapezoids well too. I posted the link to this diffuser above. It is in and out of stock all the time.

They do protrude, but that is by design. I think they would look stupid if they were flush like the stock tips. They can be adjusted to your liking. I did what Dinan recommends, which is the ability to just read the "Dinan" label on them.

I don't have any top down photos handy, but here are a few from an angle as well as the look I had before I upgraded which was the plan all along.

Exhaust look great, looking forward to some sound clips. If I am being honest, I am not loving the painted diffuser. It looks off from the cars color or it just didn't take well to it in terms of finish. I think all gloss black would look better. I also think whatever you have there for reflectors could be throwing the fitment off from a visual perspective. Just looks like you are missing the reflectors and there is hole there. I smoked mine dark with film and took it off the same day. I think for an LCI, the reflectors balance out the tails.

I hope you don't mind my $.02 cents. I often appreciate others input.

I went with the OEM rear CF diffuser. There are very similar looking knockoffs on eBay - this is OEM. Real CF. Painted center section to match to match car. Not cheap - the CF piece is $1500 and the new center section is about $600. Then paint costs. I had a rear end collision and was able to get of yahoo to work with me and swap out parts. Also I have the Stock exhaust with resonator delete.
