RV on the 540i M Sport

Well just out of interest I specced up an M5 they asked what my 540i M Sport with all the extras including the MPPK......................
well retail it's £42K,,,,,,,,,,,, I said hang on after 4 months it dropped £13K............. ......... told them where to go.
I should get that next year with luck, anyway it seems to be the way BMW are going with PX. good way to loose customers.

Why should anybody be surprised about a dramatic drop in value from new for a car? The biggest cost of car ownership for the first few years is depreciation. That is why holding on for several years -- or leasing -- makes sense, and short term ownership does not make sense.

As per this article, our beloved G30 is the fastest depreciating car, albeit 2 days ago, based on the date of the article.

Sad but true
Cheers

You shouldn't be even looking John. . At just a few months old, in the worst place for free fall depreciation. Even at a year old it will still give you a kicking.

If you really are tempted to keep changing cars, best look at buying into nearly new examples, where the initial hit is far better cushioned if you want to change again.

Garages love guys who canít resist the next model, always have done.

Agreed silly to test the water that early, annoying though at such an offer seeing them still at £48/50K secondhand.
That's Dealers for you, want it both ways.

Your new car loses the VAT part of the price you've paid as soon as it's yours so that should be why the hit is so large so quickly

Medium size saloons are the worst when it come to depreciation.

In 2011 I bought my wife a year old E200 Estate with 10,000km on the clock for R450k. New it was R600k.

A year later I sold it privately for R300k. Best I could get as a trade was R240k.

I was thinking the petrol models would keep their values better than diesels' in the UK. My 520d that cost £38,460 after discount is now being valued from £22000 to £26,000 with 17,500 mileage. £16000 to £12,000 reduction in value.

The 5 and 3 Series depreciate heavily. Never buy one at list price. Aim for 20-30% discount.

Big engines take the biggest hit. Look up 2-3 year old F10/F11 and you will see that price differences between 4 and 6 cylinder engines is small.

I am in the market for a G31 now and it’s an ideal time as new reg plates are due on the 1st of September. Several dealers are offering 0% finance on the G30/31 from £357/month with £357 deposit.

Because dealers get good volume bonuses are good when plate changes are due, generous discount are very easy to get.

This week I was pulled into a BMW dealer by the 0% finance offer. Another pull factor was that some dealers are advertising used F25 with the same equipment, age and miliage as mine for £29-30k. To my shock horror three BMW dealers Is poke to value mine at £20,300~. Even webuyanycar and similar businesses were offering a grand more.

Basically they are aiming for a 40-50% gross margin. Yes dealers need margin for the odd alloy refurb and scuff repair but I didn't expect such a big discrepancy. However, I'm a aware that margins are new cars is low and thus screwing people in trade-in is where there's money to be made.

This is the first car I've ever bought on finance and this is a big lesson about low trade-in values and the importance of thinking long and hard about the car you want to buy.

Lastly, all options except leather and automatic gearbox account for nothing.

Fascinating discovery John!
The dealer will want to make money on the sale of your car and the only way they can obviously create a margin is by screwing you over!!

I'm not too surprised at the drop, after about 18 mths the curve does flatten out a bit.

One criticism I have of the M5 is that is lacks the flared out wheel arches, like the M3 has vs std saloon. You would need to go for competition with M performance side skirts to make that car look sufficiently different from your own car!

Hope your car is good mate , I'm certainly very happy with it.... regret not going for MPPSK and not even sure I can still get it ? Law change right ?

Hi, yes you can still get the MPPSK system, it does NOT effect emissions/fuel economy , yes you are right about the M5 not looking much if any different than what I have, and the pricing of the M5 is Franky ridiculous compared to other cars in than performance bracket, discount must be just round the corner BUT not sure I want one now, my car has just covered 4K miles and drives great with plenty of go.
It will be interesting to see just how many M5's get sold, BMW AUC site has 2 pages of them at silly money all ready, none sold!!!.
