Wow Matt usually isn't so critical in his reviews. Seems like he was really turned off by the car.

Honestly I used to like this guy but his knack of knowledge about these cars is mind blowing...going on and on about the DCT in the M5 and how shitty the 8 speed is...cmon that's amateur hour...loses all credibility on this review. Oh and the window switches in the M5 are made of solid heavy gold compared to the M550 light and cheap switches. Lol

Bud preferring a slush box to a proper dual clutch certainly is amateur hour...but not on Farah's part.

The only statement I agree with is the one about the exhaust not sounding much or any louder than stock. Of course I don't like any of the styling of the Dinan M550i either and probably would not pay that much for a tune but he did say the M5 starts at $103,000 not loaded at this price. Equipped the same as this particular M550i would definitely put the M5 in a much greater price range. Also I think anyone over 40 years old would look silly in a M5 IMHO. They are nice but a bit brash compared to M550i . Lastly, why didn't he put it in sport or sport plus like anyone else would. Seems as if he doesn't know a lot about BMWs . Just my opinions here.

When the M550i came out, honestly, I thought to myself "what's the point of that?" - it's big and powerful and has an 'M' on the backside, but it's just absolutely not an M5.

However, it has real deep performance as well as many other strengths, whilst avoiding that street-racer uncompromising nature of the M5 itself. Great on the track but simply too big/fast for normal roads, and not as an everyday drive (IMO).

Now I totally get the 550.

It was mostly a stop gap car until M5's arrival

Or an understatement that still delivers extremely well.

You know damn well the one Matt Farrah tested didn't have Nappa leather. My point still stands, the M5 feels much more luxurious inside.

The tuned M550i vs. stock M5 debate here seems a bit odd. There's room for both and a reasonably significant difference in price.

For those looking for a sport sedan, but recognize they're unlikely to be able to exercise its total capability, the M550i is a great choice/compromise on performance/value.

For those looking for the prestige of knowing they have the best, fastest sports sedan on earth, there's the M5.

The DINAN car is show case of all of the products they offer for the platform - not an Alpina-style built to spec offering. DINAN likely recognizes that consumers are more likely to purchase component pieces (some want style, some want 'speed') than an entire package (much as they once pushed the 'badge').

It's a good time to be a hi-po sedan buyer.

Yeah I'm sorry but I expected more from Farah. Adaptive mode barely feels any different from comfort. In Sport Plus the M550 feels like a wild animal, which he should've tested the car in

Fully aware. Another BMW disappointment. It's choosing the path of MB rather than Porsche. Sad.

They're producing big heavy submarines with auto transmissions, bland styling in and out, with unremarkable engines that stir little emotion. And to compensate for this they make them staggeringly fast as if somehow that's all that matters. Does this sound like the description of an M car to you? Me neither. BMW is lost. And after my M2 lease expires so is this long time customer.

The most important part of the review is something we all know, BMW has turned into Merc. It's no longer the ultimate driving machine, it's straight-line power with decent comfort. This 5 is boring as hell to drive, and it has been for the last decade. It is what it is, built for China.

So let me get this straight, my car was $86k. Missing parking assistant, dynamic display, and nappa dash.

If it had those options, maybe the car would be $89k. Forget the B&W system, unnecessary. Now if we throw on just the tune for $2600, we are at ~$92k.

New M5 starts at $103k, and honestly who the heck is going to order that car in completely unmodified form. NO way anyone orders that car with out the following:
- 20" wheels $1300
- Full Merino Leather upholstery $3500
- Driving Assistance Plus package $1700
- Executive Package $4000
- Carplay $300

So all told, another $10 grand in options. Based upon the expectations that the reviewer put on the 550, bad interior, features, etc. A new M5 is going to be at least ~$113k.

So, by no means am I saying the 550 is anywhere near the car the M5 is. We get that, but it's not a horrible car as some are saying. Heck, we have two houses and two new BMW's, no way my wife would have let me spend yet another $20 grand just to meet Matt's expectations. I don't know what reality Matt is in, but $20 grand is decent money for anyone who isn't in the top 1%.

Funny all the negativity, I love the car. And based upon some posters current cars, I have to scratch my head.

Here's another review of the Dinan S1 version.
Lengthy but more positive and more content about the M550i and 5 Series features.
BTW: 0-60 mph measured in 3.5 sec.

I feel the same way -- I love my car!

I think people analyzing the car as a step down from the M5 are thinking about it from the wrong direction. The M550 is a 540 with a bigger engine and suspension upgrades -- A mid-sized luxury barge that is quick between stop lights.

This is exactly what I wanted for my daily car. I like acceleration. I like being a fast car off the line, even if there are no other cars. I like knowing that the car is quick enough to slot into a small gap in traffic when turning out of parking lots. And I like that, when the situation calls for it, I can execute a quick pass. The M550i just moves at a different speed than 95%+ of the other cars on the road. And it does so in a manner that does not draw a lot of attention to itself.

If I wanted a thoroughbred performance vehicle I would have either (a) bought an M5 or (b) bought a sports car...you know, the type with two doors. Buying or contemplating the M550i as a "cheap" M5 seems like a path that leads to suffering.
