Display key question?

I spec’d my car with the display key. For the other owners who have it, is it too bulky? Do you use the spare key? My issue is I have other things I always attach to the car key, and seems the display key doesn’t have a cutout for a keychain or anything. First world problems I know, but what is everyone doing?

I have one as it came part of the tech package it I don't use it.
The reasons are :-
Remote services via app on phone provide the same and much more functionality. (I don't have remote parking)
Standard key works just fine.
Need to ensure it is charged and have noticed that when not used it depletes in a few weeks. Guess that's what the wireless charging in the car is for!

Whilst it is larger than a standard key I don't actually find it being too big but some people may disagree on that.

Display Key is my daily driver , it's not to bulky I can fit it into my blue jean's lighter pocket too . I don't use other remote key fobs at all and don't miss them
My recommendation is if you go for the display key you should be ordering wireless charging tray for your car . Display Key battery lasts more than 3 weeks at standby but it's a neat convenience to be able to charge it wireless

My daily key as well. It's not as big as some of the reviewers have said in other threads. Fits perfectly in my pockets.

I use it mainly for functionality; it's come very handy when I needed to get into tight parking spaces. You can be in and out of a space in less than 30seconds.

I also use it to check fuel level and miles left. Yes, you can use the Connected Drive App to do it but with the key it's already on screen. Much easier and it's readily available.

I've had the car for nearly 2 months now and yet to run out of battery. I simply charge it via the wireless charger in car once a week or so when I'm driving.

Yes display key is rather pointless except for the remote Parking feature. But I'd have preferred it if they stuck that in a normal key or let the mobile app have that functionality too.

Saying that the feel of the key in your pocket isn't bad. I've gotten a little used to the idea of having my house keys and car key separate.

Finally if we're out as a family my wife can keep the house keys with the normal key on it and I'll keep the display key in my pocket. So if we separate we each have a key etc.

Exactly what he said for me. Its like he stole that out of my head actually.

Also to add, the iphone app will give you all the info the display key does like AP says, but if like me you have Android, the app shows limited info and the display key then is the only way to see if a window/sunroof is open/tilted, a door is not closed properly or the boot is open, and to see if the interior alarm sensors have been deactivated after locking (handy if you have to leave kids/dog in the car).

posted this on my review of my 540i previously but reposting the picture so you can judge the size for yourself.

Seems to be a "marmite" option. Some people like it, and others don't see the point.(bar remote parking which of course requires this)

It does help if you are the type that is not usually sure whether you have locked the car or not. It is much easier to check than using the mobile app

I use it on a daily basis so far (only been a week). The only issue I have is that the display key has no cut out or space for it go on a keychain and I like to have my office keys, home keys along with the car key fob together in the same bunch. With this I have to remember to carry them both separately. That's the only issue. I don't mind the size or anything itself as I am always in suits anyway and that's my jacket' inner pocket is for.

Have a look on ebay - you can get cases that have a key ring on them and allow full access to the buttons.

Yep, you can buy it and get it coded. The dealer can do this or you can DIY.

I'm not sure, mine came with the display key. But I have seen others post that their dealer has offered to supply & code for cars that did not come with it.

My dealer told me to be careful with mine or it costs $1200 to replace. This is in Canada. Not sure how accurate that is.

Ya I saw these, might just have to go this route to solve the purpose.

600+ EUR and they break very easily, don't drop it on the floor.

You can buy it here and they will code it using your VIN.

Wow@ the price. Didn't know they were so much. As much as I like it, I wouldn't say its worth $750 as a retrofit.

It is only "essential" if someone has remote parking, and if they do, they would have the remote key anyway.

I have yet to take delivery of my G30 but I have seen that it is rather bulky for a key so I have decided to use the spare normal key fob for my daily driving and use the display key on the weekends. seems more practical for my situation. but I do love the display key for what it is.

I have a Display Key as it came with the Tech Pack....although it grey screened and has recently been replaced under warranty. It strikes me as one of those "we have the technology to do it, so we will" things as opposed to a need for it aka creating a solution to a problem that didn't exist!

I find it too bulky and impractical as you can't connect a key....but there is another issue I've found, put it in the wireless charging tray to charge, but it keeps connecting and reconnecting as you drive, because it slides about in the tray.
