Radar Detector on OBDII

Hi,

When plugging my radar detector to the OBDII port, it switches on and works fine. After switching off, the car, it stays on for a while and finally powers off. But when starting the car again, it won't turn on unless if remove the OBDII plug and re-insert it again. Any idea of what's happening?

The radar detector works fine when using another power source. I just like the added accuracy provided via the OBDII port so would really like to make it work...

The power never shuts off on the ODB port. I leave my UniCarScan adapter in mine ful-time and I still see it as an available wireless network when I'm near my car. Your radar detector probably turns off due to lack of activity. This is not the appropriate way to power a radar detector. You don't want anything to short out.

Do yourself a favor and wire it to fuse block #50 near the passenger kick panel. That block only shares power with the cigarette lighter. Use a fuse tap and then you can use both with safe, switched power. The power will turn off in about 10 min after vehicle shutdown.

VirtualGuitars is right. I did that using a fuse tap bought on Amazon with a 10 ft. cord (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 -- about $20) and followed the excellent directions supplied here: http://www.eyephysics.com/BMWG30/bmwg30.html. I did not have to remove any interior body panels to run the cord. It just tucked in under the panels. I used a plastic trim tool to help. When plugged into the unused fuse slot #F59 that I used (located at the end of the fuse block), the detector stays on a while after you shut down as it is wired to a time delay relay. It comes on again when you open the door. --Bob

Yep. Plus an ODB port is the last place you want to have a short circuit. I don't know why anyone would want to power any non-ODB accessory to it.

Just to clarify: the ODBII cable is designed to power the detector - which will then get more than just power. Just doesn't seem to work with BMW (or any non-Japanese brand for that matter).

But thanks for the feedback, I'm using F59 and it works
