Post BMW is Most Admired Auto Company in Fortune 2013 List

The Fortune World's Most Admired Companies 2013 list has BMW 14th overall, and the highest ranked automobile company.

Quote:
Why it's admired:

The Rolls-Royce and BMW names are synonymous with luxury – and not just in the carmaker's native Germany. The world's leading premium vehicle manufacturer has earned global renown in places such as Brazil, Russia, India and China. Its progress there, analysts predict, will be particularly lucrative in coming years. The company turned a profit during the recession, unlike most of its competitors. Up next, it's going long on China, where it has plans to invest $600 million Euro. —AV

We are not happy with the quality of service provided by dealers here in New York 5 boroughs.

...can't say I'm surprised. In the name of "making profit" their main goal - they're most successful.

Just like they used to be most successful when they made "the perfect blend of performance / luxury to build 'the ultimate driving machine'" their main goal years ago.

I hate to be the one who breaks this to you, but they lied back then. They wanted to make a profit then, too.

Never said they didn't. It's the purpose of a business.

Difference is who they're marketing to (the demanding performance car driver vs. everyone with a semi-decent paying job that want the status), and if they're letting money cloud judgement on what is a good car or not from an engineering standpoint. Its when they made money their PRIMARY goal that they shot themselves in the foot, at least among enthusiasts.

Without this judgement, all cars are for the same function - some are more expensive than others for no reason then.

Same arbitrary value as buying name brand clothes vs. stuff from your local Kohl's.

The difference in cost used to be for the performance you were getting. Now it's all about riding the old curtails and using the BMW name as a status symbol.

Think you've got the rose tinted spectacles on there. There's always been less than stellar bottom of the range models that have probably been over priced for what they were, and there have also been times when the company has had to make models that weren't what the enthusiasts wanted in order to maintain a healthy business - or just to survive if you look back further.

Your points are valid but some of it is bound to happen when a company grows beyond a certain size. It's marketing its products to many more people than the original enthusiast base. The decontenting is infuriating though, and most mfrs are guilty of it. Bean counters at work.
