2018 M550i Exhaust options

Hey,

Since picking up the car about a year ago, I decided to make some changes.
Hoping it's not going to become a bottomless pit like my e92 m3 so I'm only doing the basics.

Car is going in for BM3 and XHP at the end of the month but I want to do downpipes and exhaust as well. There doesn't seem to be a lot of options out there for this platform.

So far the only turboback systems I found were from FI and Armytrix.
I found catbacks by Dinan and ACS.

Does anyone have any experience with any of the above setups or can recommend any alternatives. Ideally, I would like to keep things uniform in terms of downpipe - midpipe - axleback but open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Throw Remus into that mix, axle or catback, choice is yours.

Depends on what level of sound you’re going for and what tone as well.

I installed a complete M5 M-Sport exhaust system (without OPF). In addition, 200 Zeller Sportkats also for the M5.
The whole thing makes the car around 6db louder and is now worthy of a V8.
Coordinated with the software, it brings about 20 - 25 hp.

But then you also have to change the rear diffuser to M5 because of the tailpipes.

As Mike said, depends on what you are looking for and what you value. I applaud you for wanting on uniform system from the cats. I was in that camp as well. Chopping out the resonators was not for me. I know no one sees it, but I did not like the idea of chops and welds. Even the best weld job looks like, well, a weld. That said $300 for a resonator delete vs. $5,000 for a catback is tough to swallow.

I went with Dinan over Remus for a few reasons. There is something about having a Dinan modified BMW that was always on my list with my prior cars and it seems to carry a little more weight in the car community. The next reason was the sound. Dinan has a smooth engineered sound. A nice growl with the occasional crackle on downshift. I was very concerned about having that "look at me" and obnoxious to some loud exhaust. Remus is more in that category and FI and Armytrix most definitely are.

Finally, I was more interested in the quad double round 4" tips and the look of it. I am very happy with my Dinan catback. It sounds better with age too.

Well said Joe,
One thing I will say though, Remus brings the V8 to life! That low deep growl is something else. Puts a smile on my face every single time I hear it.

I definitely agree on a uniform setup, axleback A plus midpipe B plus downpipes C doesn't interest me, although some mix and match setups sound great.

Definitely looked at dinan as the 1st option, my e92 m3 was a full dinan car minus the stroker, want to go in a different direction this time.

Currently thinking FI or Armytrix, would love to hear it in person as usually clips don't do the sound justice.

Good plan. Too bad we aren’t closer, I’d definitely swing by. You are 💯 correct, clips don’t represent real life sound well.

They kind of are plug and play with minor coding. You just have to rearrange some wires/pins on the inner connectors.

I am running the Dinan x-mid pipe along with the Eisenmann axle back exhaust box, and the fitment is plug and play, and frankly sounds to me how the engine should - more exotic like the F90 rather than a big block Chevy.

You could do something like this and add on quality down pipes for a great turbo-back system and it would sound pretty incredible (you will get more rasp if you do catless DPs though).

Im currently running a FI catback exhaust on my '18 m550 that I'm considering selling but hadn't gotten around to posting. I have the seup with the quad carbon tips. I can maybe send you some sound clips if you're interested thru Instagram or even whatsapp. Just shoot me a private message.

I have an armytrix exhaust with vrsf catless downpipes. It was way too aggressive. So I put my stock mid pipe with resonators and had a custom piece fabricated to use the armytrix exhaust with the stock mid pipe.

Here is the video.

You will hear four sounds

The first is Eco with valves closed
Second is ego with valves open
Third is sport with valves closed
4th is sport with valves open.
