540ix Brakes (Discs & Pads)
The time has come to change out the discs and pads on the car, all round. I thought I would of seen something popup on the idrive to say they need to be changed but nothing has. They definitely need changing as there is a big lip on the discs and braking from high speed is starting to make my bum go twitchy at times!
Just wanted to see/know what others have done in terms of replacements. I have the M Sport Braking System (Front 374 x 36 and Rear 345 x 24 discs) I started off looking at BMW main dealer, I knew I wouldn't go down this route but was curious. My local dealer quoted just under £1400 (supply and fit) but they said it maybe more due to them being the M Sport Brakes. My initial thoughts were to get OE replacement/Brembo parts but now have started to look at EBC. They do 2 types of discs - Normal - EBC D Series Premium OE Replacement Discs (Pair) To Fit Front Uprated - EBC USR Series Fine Slotted Discs (Pair) To Fit Front Is it worth spending more then double for the uprated ones? I'm also leaning towards getting the Red Stuff brake pads but from doing some online research, many opt to go for the Yellow Stuff. I have no plans to use the car on track, just road/fast road use. Does anyone have experience or know which pads would be best to for our cars? (I know everyone driving style can differ) Not sure whether to just get the OE replacements or go down the route of getting the EBC parts Thanks in advance

those black discs look mean as hell
slots/holes don't do anything for road use, even quite hard road use if you want the look, then go for the slots/holes but if it's not a concern to you go for plain rotors for the pads i guess your initial choice is the safe bet the more performance focused a pad is, the more drawbacks it has in other areas (dust, noise, wear rate, etc.) |

I used EBC yellow all around in another car and the OEM pads were much better in that car in terms of feel and wear. I also used EBC yellow in the rear of my g30 and they lasted about one year each time I changed them.. although there are many brands better than OEM, EBC is not one of them IMO

When looking, I only came across Pagid, Brembo, EBC and Zimmermann. But when you start to look for 374 x 36 discs, the choice gets more limited.

I recently went with standard BMW discs, i would never go for drilled or slotted as they add a lot of extra noise. At the time i just put on oem spec pads, they are driving me mad with low speed brake squeal and the pads clunk in the caliper at low speed which is annoying. I have a set of EBC yellowstuff pads and New guide pins and spring clips to put in this weekend. Ill report back when they are bedded in

When you guys use non OEM pads do you add the double sided tape the OE pads have that 'bond' the pad to the caliper? I think that will impact that clicking and low speed noise from dragging, etc.
The dust on the OE pads is unbearable for me so I'm definitely getting non OE pads soon. The Brembo NAO ceramic pads seem impossible to come by so I already purchased the adhesive sheets for whatever aftermarket pad I end up with. |

Any non OE pads I've seen don't have the adhesive backing. I went with EBC yellowstuff today and new guide pins and spring clips and I haven't noticed any clunking yet.
I wonder is there any part number for the adhesive tape that the oe pads use. I didn't notice anything on realoem |

The photos of OE pads show it's 3M 468MP 200MP adhesive which is made for high temp applications (400F) in challenging environments. So that's what I bought to use on my pads.

Great thanks for the info, I'll order some up if I get any issues with the new pads clunking. So far so good though

I was tempted to go with EBC Red's but looking forward to your feedback once they have bedded in and settled. Just curious, how do the red or yellow pads look in the caliper? Can you see a lot of yellow?

Will be ordering the red stuff soon and then attempting to fit them myself! From the looks of things, the rear pads require a little more effort then doing the fronts.

I got EBC redstuff all around and went with Brembo Rotors. I upgraded my rear rotors from 345 to 370mm and changed out my rear brake carriers to fit the rotor.
The Redstuff are great for street use and they don't throw as much dust as OEM. I opted to skip the slotted and drilled rotors. For daily driving, I don't need the wet braking of the drilled rotors, and the slotted rotors will eat up my brake pads. You can see the red pads behind the calipers, looks kinda weird being red and blue, but I don't mind. If I were doing it for looks I would get dimpled and slotted over drilled and slotted and I would use a different set of pads. |
