Seems like a smart move...Audi is out and I just recently read that MB is pulling out of diesels in NA.

It's a good move by BMW, especially since others in the same class doesn't offer a diesel.

Badge it as a 518 or 560 for all I care. I'm just happy to be getting the 5D. Can't wait.

Are you saying the US verison of 540i has same engine as the Euro 530i?

I think so too. Would have been nice to see those two options in the X3 and 3 series BMW here in America

Current G20 diesel models in the UK

520d - 190hp - 2l 4 pot
530d - 260hp - 3l 6 pot
540d - 313hp - 3l 6 pot biturbo (not launched yet)

30d and 40d are essentially the same engines except the 40d has 2 turbos instead of 1.
You have forgotten 525d - 231hp 500 Nm (369 ft lb) -2l 4 pots but biturbo

That 2 litre petrol engine was better than 530d's engine. 530d had a very impressive low end torque, but 2 litre patrol engine felt more refined, smoother and more expensive. That's why 4 years after that, when I was buying my own BMW, I went for E93 330i even though it was ridiculously expensive both in terms of purchasing cost and ownership cost.
That's just plain ridiculous in my opinion. The new 30d engine is an absolute masterpiece, probably the single most impressive engine coming out of Munich these days.

30d installation in the G30 body is so well isolated that mechanical noise and vibration is genuinely never an issue. Improved over F10, which itself was quieter than E60. It makes a genuinely likeable sort of faint woofly roar under wider throttle openings and just fades into the background the rest of the time.

BMW 540d USA

I have gone through the specs of the new 540d, that will be sold in the US.

It has the same engine as the European 530d, but some how the 0-60 time is being stated as 4.5 secs, whereas the European motor does that in 5.4 secs.

The online configurator is now available on BMWUSA.com.

Just got an update from BMW, I have reported this to them, they have confirmed that it is an error, they are correcting this on their website now.

Curious of this as well as BMW has historically been conservative with their output/performance numbers. If 4.5 is accurate,

Hi,

I just checked with them(BMWUSA), they admitted it was a mistake, they are correcting it now.

I get why people buy this diesel car when they drive a huge amount (economy, although even that isn't obvious), but why would anyone else consider it? It's more expensive than the 540i, but accelerates slower. How is the extra torque a benefit if the car still accelerates slower?

Whilst horsepower is measured and yup pretty much defines the 0-60 time and top speed of a car, its not something you can feel - torque is and gives you the 'sensation' of acceleration (its an amount of delta/change vs the measurement of overall work):

In practice high torque makes a car "feel" powerful and effortless even if the 540i next to it would beat it to the 1/4 mile every time.

If youve not experienced it itd be certainly worth a test drive.

Because Diesel fuel is cheaper than premium grade gas at most places, also it gives significantly more MPG.

I was asking for reasons not related to economy. Even the economy part isn't obvious because the car itself is more expensive (in the US), and diesel is actually more expensive than premium for many. For example, in California, which is the most populous state in the US, diesel is more expensive than premium.
