M550i engine lubrication service campaign

Received a letter telling me to schedule a service appointment for "new software, with an improved engine lubrication strategy." It says "your vehicle will be programmed with the newest engine software. In addition, various engine mechanical components will be inspected and replaced, if required, with improved parts." It also says programming will take two hours unless "additional components need replacement."

Anyone know what this is about?

I’m dropping mine at the dealership tomorrow for this. Apparently they are also changing the oil lines that go to the turbos? Not sure if this is part of the same recall or not.

recall M550i

I recieved the same letter. Dropping in to my dealer this week. They say the job includes re-Programming the engine software and inspect the oilpipes to the turbos. I`ll Guess this is connected to the enginefailure and the issues many M550I have, where they need to replace the whole engine after some engine damage ? Or maybe not ?

I got this letter earlier in the year.

Had the fix done, took 1/2-day.

I just remember they were very vague about what needed to be done and why, and whether it was a pure software update or a mechanical intervention also. I'm still none the wiser but assumed it relates to the engine control.

And I can tell you that when I got back in my car, every iDrive setting had to be re-programmed.

Do they not give you a detailed sheet at the end explaining what they did during the service? This is my first BMW and every other car I've had ended with a detailed paper at the end with what was done.

I assume this will wipe out any user coding?

No detailed sheet, but no bill either, just a free hire car for the day.

The closest they got was "it will be an update of the vehicle".....I'm just guessing it was something that needed a fix, a kind of recall, emissions perhaps, legal reasons, they were certainly quite coy about it.

And now they stopped producing this model at all.........

Received my letter this week as well. Scheduled for service on the 20th. I guess the N63TU2 still has gremlins like its predecessor(s)?

Other forum convo on this as well: https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sh....php?t=1299855

2018 M550i "Recall" Customer Campaign

Brought my 2018 M550i (5,800 miles) to dealer this week for this "software update." When I picked it up I checked the BMW Connected Drive APP and noticed it was giving me erroneous readings. It indicted that the front windows were down (they were not) and that the hood was opened (it was not). Also, am unable to send any commands to the car from the Connected account. Cannot lock/unlock, ventilate or view cameras. Rubbish! When I told the dealer about this, here is their response: "I just spoke with the both shop foreman, they just received another update from bmw overnight that they will be uploading over the weekend. They are both in agreement that it is more than likely a software issue in the new update. They have had 5 updates from bmw in the last 6 months fixing found concerns. If you can make it through the weekend.”

Does this sound like a messed up organization, or what?

Does the car still drive the same? Better? after this service? That’s my concern... don’t want to see a decrease in performance.

Got the same letter. Took it into dealership about 3 weeks ago. They had it for two days.

TLDR - they replaced the oil lines for the turbos and updated the DME. I had to restore a few iDrive settings. As to performance - absolutely no difference noted. Still as fast as ever

Details:

One of their master technicians came out and showed me what they inspect, replace, perform, etc.:

1. Inspect oil line for each turbo - apparently the non-braided (rubber insulated) lines have a possibility of leaking over time. If they find one they will replace it with a braided line. He inspected mine in front of me and found I actually had one of each. How odd! Even surprised him.

2. Inspect a small gasket right under the engine cover for some liquid residue(coolant?) - If they find that it means something needs to be replaced. I can't remember what would need to be replaced since he inspected it in front of me and said it looked fine, but said it look like white salt around the gasket and it would be very obvious.

3. Will update software version in the DME - he did not have any additional information and said they don't really get details on what's included, just that it needs updating.

Why the DME update?

Sounds like mechanical issue not a software issue to start with.

The DME update is a separate service campaign (SIB:B122418). It stated it was to "improve engine lubrication strategy". I got that one but not the replace hardware one, which is a different SB.

Engine Lubrication Strategy software update

Since this campaign started, there have been 5 different software versions/Updates because of bugs and glitches. So, depending on when you had this done, you may be going back to have it redone. This is BMW at its finest. I remember the original N63 Campiagn.... what a nightmare

Just had my engine lubrication fix accomplished last Friday & Saturday. On Tuesday morning, I got a check engine light and took the car in for service Wednesday. Apparently the software has done something to the front grill actuators and they are stuck open. They are ordering new actuators and will replace them this week.

If it's a software problem messing with the actuators that worked just fine before the software update, I'm convinced it's probably going to happen again.

Frustrating to take the car back for a 3rd time over the course of a week and a half when it was running perfectly.

Had mine done a few days ago. Seemed pretty painless. A few software updates and the change of a turbo oil line. Car running the same.

The radiator grills failing are not related to the programming you received. The grills are failing more commonly on early model G30 vehicles and are covered under new vehicle warranty. Seen a large amount on G12/G30 and G01 for radiator grills causing CEL. Updated grills will remedy this issue.

Interesting. The dealership stated this has happened to every car they've done the lubrication fix on. Obviously correlation doesn't equal causation, but the timing is really weird. I'm hoping they get the new actuators this week and I can get rid of this damn CEL.
