New M3 owner need help here!

Hi guys, I have just purchased an 2011 E92 M3 w/ IPE F1 exhaust, and I am suffering from heavy gas smell coming right out of the exhaust. Whats even worse, I don't like the sound of this exhaust, its way too loud for me. Anyone can help me with the gas smell? Feeling frustrated for this exhaust...

If it's a full exhaust (which I'm assuming it is), you can swap someone for an OEM X pipe. You're going to want to get under the car or take it to a shop and snap some pics of the piping. This will change the sound and most likely get rid of the smell. Then, if you still hate the sound, you can sell the IPE muffler here and get another aftermarket alternative or get an OEM muffler and work your way from there.

Yep sounds like your cats have been removed, stock midsection will put all 4 cats back and get rid of gas smell and quiten it down. If still too loud you will need to switch to a different axleback

Yes it is a full exhaust, I am considering replacing it with a bmw performance exhaust, is that viable? Do I have to add some OEM components? I really have no idea what the whole exhaust system is comprised of, X pipe+muffler+something? By the way there is a little box with two control knobs, do you know what they are used for? Thank you!

Yes!! I am thinking about this, why would they do that? Its so noisy and smelly! My girl friend really hate this car and she misses the torque of my 335is.:
Do you know the cheapest way to get rid of the noise and make it quite?

Those are for the valves in your exhaust Try switching them to the "closed" position. It should quiet down the exhaust in a noticeable manner.

If you buy the BMW Performance exhaust, you'll need nothing other than what the standard retail box comes with. Just plug and play

Cheapest way would be to swap with someone with an OEM mid section (make sure you do your research on pricing. I'm sure you paid for some of this mod in the car purchase price.)

OR

Close the valves, hahah. It won't do much for the smell, but at least it'll be quieter.

Also, a supercharger will help with the lack of torque if that's what you're in to.

Does the car have aftermarket suspension bits?

The easier way for me to get rid of those is get my cats back, which resides in the middle section of the exhaust system, is my understanding correct? Im a completely M3noob here lol.

Sounds like you need to replace the girlfriend, too JK

And the 4 cats reside the mid section of the exhaust - or the "X" pipe, so yes, you're correct.

At any rate, try playing with the valve switches and find the quietest setting.

Damn, I don't have the remote of this exhaust, there are three modes for this ipe exhaust: Open, close and auto, I think the owner left it Open, no matter what I tried the sound is the same. I am thinking about selling it or trading: (
And My m3 feels much slower 0-80 than my 335is... Start to missing her.

Yup you are right, and she's mad at me for making this purchase so quickly. I don't know it was a F1 IPE whole exhaust, I thought it was just a loud end section mods.

No worries mate. You need to get the cat's back as a starter (seller still have them?) - smell gone and sound start to be reasonable. Most people incl myself certainly want something to open up from stock sound which actually is too low. Playing around with the muffler does the trick.

The car is bloody awesome bro. Shame if you get it wrong simply because a failure exhaust.

Good luck!

Seller don't have them, they even lost the remote of the exhaust. I need to get the cats back, where can I get after market cat? Anyone selling them? Or do u think someone would love the sound it made so that we can do a trade?

Depending on how much cash they put on top, you'll find someone to do a trade pretty quick. You didn't smell it when you took the car for a test drive?

Unless you want your MPE to break in half over in the course of a year, go ahead and be my guest; buy it.

I highly recommend you putting an OEM X-pipe back with IPE Rear. Did you get the remote for it? if so just for now close the valves if it's loud.

He doesn't have the remote.

OP, you can call IPE and see if they can hook you up with a remote and some wires. Kind of shitty the last owner didn't give it to you. Did you look all over the car? It might be shoved in the glove compartment or something.

Hey OP, you are in Los Angeles and so am I. If you want help shoot me a text 310-741-8214. Happy to give you some help in diagnosing your situation and helping correct it. I can try to help you source and OEM xpipe and rear exhaust section and we can get you up on the lift and swap out your system. I know how the whole girlfriend thing works... I had to get rid of my catless setup because it was ruining my sex life LOL.
