Just test drive 2020 m550

Wowzers. Almost too fast. 20 inch Rims surprisingly comfortable and the test was in the rain on Long Island crappy roads. Idrive 7 seemed fine but I have an Audi so nothing to compare it to. Fake engine sound is only draw back but that can be coded. Question for you all who have disengaged active sound....does it make the noise lower in the cabin or just sound more real? Also, has anyone had any issues doing this on a leased car with respect to dealer feedback, warranty voids etc. I know you can code it back but curious if service makes a note when you bring it in that there was "non certified bmw" access to cpu etc.

I'm def getting one as soon as there is any sign of a lease program.

What do you mean by the "fake engine sound".

You better be careful coding it out as you might come to miss it. The experience of various people so far is that the car would become quieter.

You can code it on and off so if I miss it I can get it back.

Thanks for info though.

You won't miss the fake noise. if you do want to hear the engine more, simply open flaps to both exhausts (tons of threads here). Can be put back with no issues (a fuse).

Still trying to see if the 2020 engine has changed the resonators as was done on the M850, significantly increasing the (real) engine sound.

This. I don't think so though, different market imo.

How is the all wheel steering? Does it have a good turn radius?

I just got my 2020 m550. When I pull windows down I don't hear exhaust that much louder so I would not disable active sound. Actually that v8 sounds great albeit it is quieter than it should be. If it wasn't a lease, I d get m Performance exhaust or other tweaks to resonators. Finally keep the flaps open at first May solve the problem.

My sound issue is inside the cabin. Trying to appease the wife, haha.

Steering felt very responsive but I haven't driven a new Bmw in a while with the electronic steering. My last one was a 13 335xi coupe.

I believe you already have an M Performance exhaust which is standard on the M550. To hear the engine more as intended, open the flaps by removing one fuse and you will better hear the music (tons of info here).

I believe it is a sport exhaust on m550, not the M performance one....

If it doesnt say M Performance on the muffler - its NOT a M Performance Exhaust.. with that said, it has the resonators so changing the muffler wont have much of an effect - you would be surprised how much muffling the resonators provide.

I have MPPSK on my 440 - not only are the resonators removed but it also has a M Performance exhaust - yes its very very loud when the valves are open.

Biggest bang for your buck is to remove the resonators vs changing the exhaust. I have seen many who have changed on a 440 with little difference... you remove the resonators, crazy loud in comparison (also snap crackle pop).

On the fence getting a 550 - I will need to remove the resonators to be happy coming from my 440 MPPSK (JB4 on top of that).

i know you just got the car, but when you feel comfortable remove the resonators. easy and simple job, and you will not regret it.

There is no MPPSK available for the M550i - it IS an M-Performance model. It already has the available M-Performance upgrades, including the exhaust.

Anyone want to opine on my original Q around whether bmw or specific dealers give you problems by doing your own coding via the app? I think I read on a forum anytime you connect with a non bmw certified/verified connection it shows it as such.

It's a lease. If I like the car I will buy the LCI model after lease end and mod the exhaust. Also will definitely get RWS and body roll control package (drive handling package?) and 20" wheels with summer tires. I got into m550 from f80 m3 and while I m done with m3 for a while, there are couple of things I would like to "bring" into the 5er.

OP I don't have the expensive but if a dealer wants to learn if any coding was done, they can do that. This is based on my research on the topic and the reason I did not do bootmod3 on my m3. The question remains if your particular dealer will do that and why, and what will they do if they find out. Here most pple say you should not have any problems but it all depends...

Depends on dealer, but also depends on your NEXT car being a BMW

If you're moving into a new lease, they'll pretty much overlook everything. Most recently for me, I turned in my '16 M4 with incredibly bald tires, a nasty pen mark on the seats and a scuffed diffuser. Dealer said nothing; BMWFS same. Literally got a letter thanking me for my 3 years, and welcoming me to my new lease.

If its a non-engine management coded item, go for it. BMW is not going to chase you down because you changed to default to Adaptive Drive, turned off ASD or changed the display type. When you turn the car in, just code it off.

I feel that the dynamic handling package is in my top 3 options. The turning radius seems tighter than my old MK7 VW GTI.
