K&N filter- need to worry about the oil?

I got K&N filters for my M550i and I remember with my F10 M5 I had to be careful of oiled filters due to MAF sensors being ruined by oil. The filters I just opened have that pink oil on the edges and I wiped off all that I could see. Just seeing if anyone else has put these on their cars without issue?

Well, I let the filters sit with paper towels to soak any excess oil over night. Little bit of their pink oil was absorbed. The instal was about 3 minute per side so including opening garage and getting tool out to walking back in was only 10 minutes. A lot easier than I thought!

I let it set overnight before installing it to remove the excess oil.

No nothing noticeable, but when you have power levels like our cars it's tough to feel even a 10hp boost . I feel better about having them in compared to paper.

That's what I did with paper towels. They soaked some oil up

Per K&N website

We are aware of the "urban myth" created by a few dealerships that a vehicle's MAF sensor can be contaminated by K&N filter oil. No evidence has ever been provided to support this "myth" and years of diagnostic testing by K&N has shown that not only is this allegation not real, it is not even possible. In our opinion, it is an excuse for a dealership and/or the vehicle manufacturer to avoid a legitimate warranty repair. In the last 4 years, we have sold over 10,000,000 lifetime air filters and received only a few hundred calls from consumers who are having dealership or service provider challenges.

On my 2018 G30 540i the strut bar runs over the top of my air box. Does the bar need to be removed to take box off? I don't see how to do it otherwise.

I removed my air box and replaced it with a BMS intake without removing the strut bar. It is a tight area to work in but it can be done.

The problem only occurs if you over oil. The filters need to have a nice thin film, not soaking in oil. One thing I've done is purchased a 2nd set of filters, that way I have one set cleaned, oiled, and ready to go. I swap the filters with every oil change, clean the used filters, spray them with oil, wrap them up in paper towels and put them away until next time.

Question..I have a US spec 2021 M550i and removed the charcoal filter, then replaced the stock air filter with a BMC. However, the stock filter had this extra small felt peice that cover a small rectangle square in the box that appears only would open due to some pressure. Is this a problem with the BMC filter not having that and any issues removing the charcoal filter?? Thanks!

I don't think that would be an issue. Most of that extra material is for sound deadening and extra filtration.

It looks like it’s extra material to cover some trap door rectangle section. It appears I’m reading the trap door is only open if the front gets clogged with snow or something that trap door opens so it can breath?? Not sure if that’s accurate or not though.

Sounds like a bypass. About 20 years ago Injen and AEM used to sell bypass filters for their CAI systems. It prevents water from being sucked up into the engine because of the low location of the filter.

Could you possibly post a pic of it?

Unfortunately, mine is all back together. This is an older air box but it’s similar to this, rectangle in the corner of the box spring loaded etc. It appears some people think it only opens if the intake tube gets clogged.

I think as long as there is filtered material between that trap door and your engine / MAF you'll be okay.

I have just fitted some BMC filters right now! They were dry to the touch and contained no excess when dabbed with a kitchen towel. The EU spec airbox did not contain a charcoal filter, however there was a thick wad of foam placed in the bottom half of the intake. The internet tells me it's a sound absorption measure, so I removed it. Test drive next....

I know it was a while ago when you put these filters in but did you notice any difference in sound?
