Woodcliff Lake, NJ – January 9 2017 10:45 am EST / 7:45 am PST …

Today, during its world premiere at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, BMW announced pricing for the latest additions to the new BMW 5 Series model portfolio: the BMW 530e iPerformance Sedan and the BMW M550i xDrive Sedan. Both vehicles will be arriving in U.S. showrooms in spring 2017.

The 2018 BMW 530e iPerformance Sedan will be available starting at $51,400 and the BMW 530e xDrive iPerformance Sedan for $53,700, plus $995 Destination and Handling. As the fourth addition to the U.S. iPerformance model portfolio, BMW once again showcases its commitment to efficiency without compromising dynamics. As for its power source, trailblazing BMW eDrive technology teams up an eDrive electric motor with a 4-cylinder 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo combustion engine to create an exceptionally efficient and powerful plug-in hybrid drive system. Combined system output of 248 hp and 310 lb-ft. of peak torque propels the BMW 530e iPerformance Sedan from 0 to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds and the BMW 530e xDrive iPerformance Sedan in 5.8 seconds. The iPerformance badge attached to all of BMW’s plug-in hybrid models bears testimony to the transfer of engineering excellence from BMW i.

The 2018 BMW M550i xDrive Sedan will be available starting at $72,100 plus $995 Destination and Handling. This vehicle takes the top spot in the current BMW 5 Series lineup and is the latest addition to the BMW M Performance model family of vehicles that combine everyday usability with the power and driving dynamics that will elate even the most discerning enthusiast. The BMW M550i xDrive Sedan is also the first M Performance model to be powered by a specifically modified M Performance TwinPower Turbo 4.4 liter 8-cylinder engine. This V8 is equipped with two twin-scroll turbochargers and features a High Precision Injection system, Valvetronic fully variable valve lift and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing control. This technology adds up to an output of 456 hp at 5,500 rpm and peak torque of 480 lb-ft from just 1,800 rpm, propelling the BMW M550i xDrive Sedan from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and then on to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. Adding to this state-of-the-art engine are BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive with rear-wheel bias and a bespoke M Performance chassis set-up, helping to create the fastest and most agile BMW 5 Series to date.

With the 540i in the sub $60k range with an already excellent engine, I'm hoping the M550i experience will warrant the $12k premium on a non "pure" M5. I'm also hoping the "M Sports Exhaust" gives the same aggressive exhaust note upgrade the the M Perf Exhaust does for the F8X series. I'm excited for more details!

figured the M550i would be priced around that number. Audi S6 is $70,900 but I think the 550i has a few standard features the Audi doesn't.

would love to see a real world M550i vs S6 test

seriously? not even close, for the money the S6 and M550i blow away the E43, especially considering you are getting V8s vs V6, not sure why anyone would pay over $70K for that sub 400HP V6 Mercedes.

Based on this I estimate the M5 to have a $98,995 starting price and toping out at $140k-$150k.

What else does the AMG have going for it? It's pretty low on power/performance compared to the M550 xdrive no?

A 2016 F10 550i M-Sport x-drive costs almost 73k before any options or packages are put on.

It's really nothing different from the successful F10 recipe. This m performance model is nothing more than making the 550i more appealing to those on the edge between the 540i and 550i.

Even though E43 is not truly AMG because of the engine is AMG enhanced, not handcrafted. but MB really put C43, E43, and other 43 models in the AMG line now.

Im big fan of BMW, but have to admit the brand new E Series is beautiful for its price, at least E300 is, E43 might little overpriced for its little V6 BiTurbo engine.

I mean those people who buy E43 can say "I'm driving AMG now", but do you count M550i is M series or 5 series with M Sport pkg?

That's a very good point, and I hope that the M550i is actually more than just a 550i M Sport. Badging and trims are nice, but what BMW hasn't made clear is what the M in M550i, M240i, really means. I think it needs to be clear and concise what the philosophy is behind this other than marketing and badges.

The M550i base price is a huge increase over the 2016 550i base price. By about $6,000 bucks. I hope the M550i will be worth that dough.

Audi is actually doing really good job for badges, they separate A, S and RS series. Make people more clear, unlike BMW and MB, they have too many "half M and half AMG" models now.

It's really not though. F10 550i x-drive with M sport is 72,800 without options. Theyre basically limiting the selection to that

I bet most people who cares enough to get the v8 buy the m-sport anyway

Yeah but doesn't the M550i also have an M Sports package that costs extra?

No it does not. That's what the "M" in M550i means.

It doesn't matter the lettering, but how the cars really perform.

Actually the M550 is an M Performance model and is considered a tick sportier than an M Sport, but still less sporty than a proper M.
