In the US, there is a $4600 Federal Income Tax credit on the 530e. If you lease it, BMWNA will give you $3000 of that as cap cost reduction reducing the lease payment. Since the RRP of the "e" is less than $100 more, the "e" has much better gas mileage just running as a hybrid without any plug-in, it's heavier weight gives a more compliant ride (if you are looking for "more sporty" you are likely considering the 540i), and winning the off-the-line stoplight grand prix because of electric motor torque; I can't understand why anyone looking at the 530i would not purchase the 530e. It's not even new technology. It uses the X5e and 330e powertrain and 1/2 of the i3 charging system and the i3 battery cells, so the electric system is now in it's third year of production.

Once you have used up your main charge from low speed city driving presumably then you have only the petrol engine as the regen must only provide a tiny amount of electrical recharge power ?
Or am I missing something?

You cant electric drive the battery all the way empty. In fact, theres plenty left even after the car stops you from electric driving and brings up the engine. The petrol engine also starts to recharge the battery when low.

Really, with any sort of legal road driving, you just cant run out of that electric juice. Afaik not even in Germany ..

It becomes a big Hybrid when you don't plug it in. You can own the car without ever plugging it in. You'll simply have a Hybrid with a bigger battery (but not all that too large) than you need for a Hybrid, with the better gas mileage that a hybrid offers.

Whats the verdict on how the 530e i performance drives?
Does it drive and handle like say a 520d or 530i model?
Any feedback from owners?
I know i will love a 520d or 530i, just need to be sure.

two back to back test drives 530i and 530e. e is faster off the line and more compliant on rough city streets. Undetectable transition between electric and gas power. Will be purchasing e when my 528i lease runs out

Does the 530e handle the same? Any difference in the way it drives, cornering etc?

The 530e is heavier because of the battery pack. Since it's slightly back of the rear axle and not an under floor pack like the i3, it doesn't do much for lowering the cg and the weight distribution moves slightly to the back. The extra weight helps with suspension compliance over rough roads. In normal driving, I couldn't detect any significant difference ( I have owned Prosche 911S and Nissan GTR). It's to be my wife's car. As I mentioned earlier, if 8/10 driving is your desire in a 5 series, you should be looking at a 540i M-sport, or higher.

540i is out thequestion as its gonna be a company car so would be too heavy on fuel and my own company car tax i have to pay.
Most of my driving is on motorways with work so long miles!

I just placed order with my lease company for a 530e se. Waiting for an order confirmation and expected delivery, I hope it's this side of Christmas.

Couldn't afford any extras so getting it as it comes, which I still preferred over a fully loaded 330e msport.

Bluestone Metallic with Black leather.

Three months from order to delivery? That's not bad going! I ordered mine at the end of July and they are looking late December delivery! And I'm closer to the factory than you! Hahaha!

Was originally quoted an August build date/production completion with mid-late September delivery, but popped into the Dealer by chance and they told me the car had already been built. Nice surprise.

if you ask your dealer for the order number, you can go on line and chat to the BMW Genius and get the "event status" which will tell you what state the car is in, and where it is. All good fun.

Thanks AP, I've got the order number now and found out the build week. The bad news is it's build week 51!!!

Let's hope it's pulled forward!

I place my order for a 530e end of May. The fleet dept and the lease company we use seemed to 'faff' (technical term) around for a few weeks so order was confirmed 21st June. Original delivery est. of 11 Sept, which I never really believed. At the beginning of August this was pushed back to 'Early Jan'!

I'm hoping for it to sneak in before christmas...

Everytime you brake. And when you use auto e-drive with navigation on, it optimizes energy usage and sometimes charges a bit using the engine when it knows it needs to keep it on anyway.

You can also set it to "keep battery level X %" and then it will charge using engine until your level is reached. You only really want to charge the battery this way for if you need to use precondition to get the car heated up or cooled down.

Anyway, you should only charge using the plug and otherwise keep the car in auto edrive and let it do its thing.
