Still Bmw knows it's markets and is aiming to please. I just feel there's some brand dilution what with 2 , 3 and 5 gt s. Apart from being ugly as hell there's just no need for them...

If this was offered in the U.S. I think it would be a hit for luxury transportation companies.

Even those people who are able to afford a 7er in China, the regular 7er is not enough for them, hence, 7er Li. They just want something bigger/better than regular. Just my .02.

BMW died with the release of the F10 and F30. The G30 is a Mercedes E Class wannabe.

Somewhere out there, an E46 owner is yelling "get off my lawn!" and "BMW died when the E90 came out."

Then play that over again w/ E46, E36... blah blah

Last Gen 5 series sold like crazy in China. And people there have different need, plus the traffic a 5 series is already huge, and there is gov officials don't want to stand out in a 7 series.
It's not like the long wheel base is going to offer here in the states.

It just shows that Chinese just have the money to be the market determinant. Heck, even Bentley Flying Spurs was designed based on their preferences.

I guess I'll go there... forget the comparisons with 7 or whatever... I actually could care less if they build another car for another demographic... no different than why they build a 3 and a 5... but why would more legroom be needed in China?

In China, it's not about how roomy a car should be to meet family needs. 5er starts 65k usd + 8% purchase tax + license cost (up to 20k usd). Mind you avg Chinese across the country makes 300-400 bucks a month. Those 5er buyers are more than capable of taking care of family.

Traditionally, L naming is an essential part of luxury for a limousine. Car as a status symbol can never afford to not have that.

So nothing to do with actual legroom. Bmw should have stuck an l symbol on the standard car.

Aha but is the Chinese market who clearly want an l symbol rather than anything practical.

BMW has to fix the damn old plastic feeling non-returnable turn signal- and windscreen wiper handles that found way to the G30...

Hopefully they will return to it when the LCI will be released, but thats still to late.

That's the ultimate 5 Series, interior is reminiscent of G11 7 Series but what's next ? A long wheelbase 1 Series to compensate 3 Series ?

well, i would love if there was a little more legroom at the back of 1 series. Though i enjoy driving it with it's small dimensions it is a real pain to carry passengers in a 1 series. you also gotta consider that not everyone buys these cars easily. In my country the minimum income that is designated by the government is about 390 euros and most people do not earn much more than that and an average 118i and 116d cost respectively 40k euros and 43k euros. As the case with G30 a 540i xDrive in m sport trim costs about 150k euros so you do the maths. I just mean in some markets buyers' money is too valuable to "just buy a 7 series".

Isn't there a long wheelbase 3 series in China also?

The US 5 is butt tight in the rear with a 6 foot+ tall person in the front seat. Adding a few inches to make it more comfortable in the back while retaining the chassis dynamics and not adding a 1000 pounds makes perfect sense to me.

As a Chinese native, I don't agree with the L stands for Luxury part. Not everyone knows what the English word "luxury" means or how to spell it. If BMW wants to play that card, they need to stop selling any model with "4" in it (which pronounced the same as "death", a number many Chinese avoids like plague).

Also the $65K 5 series will likely be a 518i built by BMW Brilliance, a joint venture between BMW and Brilliance Auto. Not the German built version.

Because car is still not a necessity in China. Most families can only afford one car. Hence the backseats are frequently used.
