First Oil Change?

Trying to nail down what seems to be the verdict regarding when to do the first oil change for the M550i.

My plan is to stick to 5k intervals, basically have every other oil change done by my independent shop and let BMW cover the 10/20/30k changes. However, I'm not really sure if I should wait till the car hits 5k miles or do one earlier after the break-in period. Car has about 1600 miles right now.

Thoughts?

Any new car I have purchased has received its first oil change at around 1k miles. I was a little late with my G30, but got it done at 1200 miles. Probably get another one done at 5k. After that, I'll get on to the 10k band wagon.

Change it now. Mechanics find pieces of metal so they all change oil in their personal cars at 1000-1500 miles

Change it for the first time at 2,000 miles then go every 5,000 after that. I reference 2,000 miles because the first thousand is the break in period where you aren't revving it high. The next 1,000 is when you will finally let loose and will probably be the most and frequent period you let loose given the novelty. At 2,000 miles, you should have 1,000 of hard driven miles where the oil and the lifters are broken in pretty good. This would be a good time for fresh oil.

That's the plan. I have done the 2k oil change and didn't have them reset the "indicator" or whatever they call it. Now the car's saying oil change is due at 8k. Not sure if I should do an oil change at 5k or just ride it out till it hits 8k do the full service with the reset.

I think your fine to wait until 8k for the free one. They will probably do it at 7k. I think if you’re within 1k miles they are authorized to do it.
