G30 Driver door not closing in 'cold' weather

Strange behaviour this last 2 weeks, has been getting fairly cold (for the UK), sort of -4°C to +1°C range when this happens:

I open car, door takes effort to open due to ice etc.... and won't slam closed... only way I can close it is to sit inside, hold door closed and press lock button
Never had this on my F10 when it was even colder...

The lock mechanism is free moving and ice-free, any ideas drivers?

I have a similar thing here, although it’s been under -20C. At -4C it still worked properly.
My car was towed into the dealership about a week ago as it wasn’t drivable with the door not latched.

The dealer managed to fix it temporarily, though it still freezes when it gets really cold. New parts have arrived at the dealer to fix permanently. A new handle and a wire of some sort I think.

In the meantime, when the outside handle is frozen or stiff, I’ve found opening using the inside door handle works ok. Definitely a pain having to roll the windows down using the key fob just so I can reach inside to open the door, especially when it’s this cold.

What I find is that it is not the cold as such, more often rain or sleet, followed by ice which is the main cause....

Poorly design really. I had to get in through the back door even with a temperature of -5 degree celsius

I experienced this last week in the UK at -4. The passenger door opened but wouldn’t close. Passenger held the door as it wouldn’t close properly. After 5mins with the heating on it closed properly. Happened again at home (same door) and I poured a kettle of warm water over the door handle and it closed. Seems to be when it is icy and freezes the mechanism around the handle freezes. Not good really as it could leave you stranded for a while and unable to secure the car.

Surprise it took that long for this to pop out, g30 has been around since late 2016? Would imagine all the 2017/2018 car which mostly went through a winter already which would show up with this problem, take worth take to dealer?

This happaned in my 2015 535. It's a stuck actuator switch. It took 4 trips to the dealership for them to figure it out. Apparently it's a well known problem now.

BTW, just ordered a 2019 M550 , June delivery, can't wait.

I got mine as one of the first batch in UK at the very beginning of 2017, so already went through winter 2017/2018 season - with no problems at all... and that was colder with longer snow and ice etc.

It only happened this year Jan 2019 - will take it to the dealer if it happens, but we are just seeing now that winter is likely to have 'gone' with temps going into the double figures (Celsius) this week and spring is on it's way

I get the opposite issue in Scotland which typical alternates with rain at about 3 deg c followed by sub zero temps-the felt soundproof lining around the door which has replaced the rubber one in the F11 collects water and then freezes to the door frame making the doors impossible to open -I'm always scared that the handle is going to tear off when opening

I have this also - front passenger door. '67 plate 530d.

Managed to lock it from the inside by using the master lock / unlock function on the driver's door. The parked close next to a wall for the evening...

Odd. Seems to go away after a while (warms up?)

This has happened to us quite a few times, lol.

Dad had to drive with the door open since it would not close. Loads of messages like vehicle ready to drive were displayed every time the car went to a standstill.

Just let the car warm up for 15-20 minutes, and all should be well.

Oh lord won’t you by me...

Getting sick of little issues like this and they always start happening just out of warranty.

Got my G30 mid jan 2018 and 2 weeks after the warranty is up this happens. How embarrassing, my drivers door would catch when closed this morning had to hold it and lock the car - now it won’t open. I am going to have climb over the centre console to get to the drivers seat.

Now I understand from the comments above that once it gets warmer outside it may fix itself but as I stay in Scotland that’s a few months off

Also with the number of you all having the same issue it’s a design flaw. I so find it strange it has not happened previously.

My BMW f10 wont close the driver side door in cold weather , it was the steel cable going from the outside door handle to the door locking mechanisme that had some water inside, new lubrication helped

Bowden cables replaced at all four corners. Doors open and close perfectly even after staying outside in freezing weather. Dealer said it is a common issue. 2019 M550 with 11,800 miles. Disappointing.
