M550i MPG (in USA)

Long time lurker here. I ordered my M550 a year ago and this forum was very helpful in how to track it through the build and the ship. I ended up getting the car in July, just 1 week before my 40th birthday, so it was a great birthday present!

I love the car and love driving it. I came from a 2010 328, so quite an upgrade there. However in the past ~year I haven't really had a chance to do a real road trip in the car.

Well, that changed last week. I live in Austin, TX and needed to go to Houston so I decided to take the M550 on the road, instead of my wife's X3, and just see what type of gas mileage I would get.

Now typically in my daily driving I get on average about 23.5mpg. My daily commute is mostly country highways, with maybe 6 traffic lights, and normally traffic is not backed up too much. If I decide to have some fun, then my weekly mpg turns out to be more like 21.

So I was curious what the consumption would be on this trip to Houston. I've done several road trips in my wife's 2015 X3 28i, and the best it's ever gotten is about 27mpg. Well, on my trip to Houston and back to Austin, I got 32mpg! That's crazy for a big v8 engine!

I used the active cruise control the majority of the trip, put it in eco-pro mode, and only went 5-10 mph over the speed limit.

Anyways, just thought I'd share my quick story, and to say how impressed I was with the gas consumption on this little road trip. ..... I love this car

I've found the same, in Highway driving on relatively flat terrain the fuel consumption is quite low. However, daily drive to work (traffic bogged highway, averaging maybe 30-40 mph) is totally different story - about 15 mpg. Oddly enough, on the same commute I got better gas mileage with the F-Type R which had a supercharged V8 with 100 more hp. I guess the better lower end torque of the Jag meant it didn't work as hard as the M550i.

Right - the gas consumption of this BMW V8 engine is ok when cruising, but quite horrible in frequent acceleration or stop/go situations.

I’ve not reset my consumption from delivery in January, after ~4200 (city, highway, hooligan) miles i’m averaging 17.3 MPG. This includes two trips to the drag strip now.

Single trips aren’t relevant to me, more the overall average for the car is of interest. My M4 was about 19.2 MPH’s over the course of 2 years and ~20k miles. Includes probably 15 trips to the drag strip.

The V8 definitely drinks more.
