B58 ~ Broken oil filter housing

My 440i GC is in for an oil service today. Decided to wait for it as by the time I'd got home in a loaner it'd be time to return.

After half an hour I was advised that the oil filter housing had "broken" during filter removal. 7 hours to replace it so I took a brand spanking new leccy Cooper S home instead.

The dealer claims that this is a known issue with the B58 but I cannot recall anyone reporting on this here. A quick forum search also revealed nothing.

Any similar experiences anyone?

Was it the housing or the oil filter pulling apart on removal. It is common for the oil filter to break on removal and bmw just replace the housing. Had it done on mine last service.

They referred to the housing itself but your interpretation may well be correct if there's no filter body to grip.

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback. I wonder if they've upgraded the filter spec. if this has been common. I wouldn't be too pleased if this happened outside of warranty.

Cheers

Happened to mine. I got given a brand new X1 to drive home in (literally brand new, only had 7 miles on it).

I took my car to Sycamore in Peterborough and they recovered the situation well. Before coming to tell me what had happened, the service advisor had sorted a car out, part was on order and all I had to do was give him my driving license. Car was ready next day.

Oil filter housing caps can be a real sod to remove. It's often down to the fact they're torqued down with oil on the seal. After 18k miles when this dries out, the torque required to remove is over double!

The general consensus is that this is a problem with extended service intervals. I don't think this is an issue if you do interim oil changes.

Thanks, to be fair to the dealer, they too had sorted a loaner for me before giving me the news.
It made a change from the 5 year long confusion they've had in mixing up me, my car and my son and his car, even going so far as to ring him yesterday asking for confirmation of my service booking today. When I arrived at the dealer today they had my car details on a form with his name and address at the top. Had a productive and polite discussion with the dealer principal.

Thanks for your input.

My first service too. Do they torque them up to tightly on assembly?

The leccy Cooper S was quite fun, if a little strange, could get used to it as a runabout.

Cheers

Mine was only on 14.5k miles but spot on the two years. Perhaps a change in seal lubricant could be useful. KY Jelly never dries out! Must sell some to BMW.

Cheers

Thanks for the info, it must be very painful to have this go wrong on a DIY basis.

Cheers

It seems to be a first service only thing, after its first service it shouldn't happen again.

I didn't think of mine at 14,500 and two years to be that much of an extended interval but maybe two years is somewhat long.

Cheers

If I recall correctly, it looked like the supplying dealer lied about doing an oil & filter change before the guy bought the car. Looking at the colour/condition of the filter, it had been fitted for considerably more miles than stated.

I have mine serviced at bmw every 12-14k and mine went on the second time round, first was fine. Sound like a poor design.

I just keep an eye out of the 25% off service promotions and book in at that point reasonable costs then.

if you're curious you can search for my threads and see the ordeal i went through - as a DIY'er.

after a bit of a battle with Sytner leicester they paid for the £120 it cost me to get the broken filter out at an independent who found an ingenious method which didn't require replacing the entire housing - and your ordeal is exactly why i chose not to get the car recovered back to my BMW dealer, as i knew they wouldn't try anything inventive (and charge me 7 hours labour instead)

They agreed to reimburse me the independent's bill for a number of reasons (all in the thread).

just make sure from now on you change the filter every 10k miles and it should be fine. I'll still continue DIY'ing an interim oil service and do the official one at an independent to keep my warranty in check.

Thanks for the information, I'll search out the thread.

In the meantime I've just had a call to say they've been unable to complete the filter replacement today and the rest of the service is still O/S.

They cannot deliver it back to me tomorrow as their drivers don't work Saturdays, so it'll be Monday before it's returned. I'll keep the leccy Cooper S over the w/e.

Cheers
