F10 M5 or 2017 M550i?

Hi all

Currently on a 3 series, but need to upgrade as the 3 kids grow up we need a bit more room.

I like a car that can take curves nicely, with a nicely balanced chassis and not sth with massive understeer like my F30 was (I modified it with anti roll bars, strut bars, camber plates... which was a pain given the way the 3 series subframes are designed)

So now I need a bit more room and was thinking an F10 M5 may be the way to go, but I could also go for a G30 M550i, more modern, xdrive so more stable and powerful enough.

My only question is will i be happy with the chassis or regret I had gone for an older F10 M5?

What do you think? how do you like the G30 M550i chassis ? are there specific must have options?

M550i I like the more modern interior, but already see myself upgrading anti roll bars to F90 ones, replacing front wishbones with F90 wishbones etc. and perhaps regret I had gone for the F10 M5

Thanks!!

Not sure, I suppose MY2018 corresponds to even earlier 2017 deliveries?

Well anyway my question stands for this car in the 460hp version at least

wouldn't you have a lot to repair/fix in the older M5 just because the previous owner would have ridden it hard and put it away wet?
(unless it was owned by a little old lady who only drove it to church on sundays)

I had an f10 528i, 535i, I went to g30 540i and now in a m550i. I have a good friend of mine who has a 2013 f10 m5.

I would go for the M550I. F10 M5 is still a great car but a little outdated. The design is over 10yrs old already. It's got more power but what's the point when you can't put that power down and enjoy it.

Everything is changing so quickly and newer cars are already out. Plus you might be able to get extended warranty if it's still under warranty. I would try and find an M550I with the dynamic handling package which is the active roll bars.

I'd choose the f10 m5 or a GSF over m550i knowing what I know now. LSD and better brakes and wider fenders for tire fitment are more important to me than xdrive and launches and technology that I almost never use.

Haha that's exactly my issue, i agree with both points of view.

If i sum up the pros and cons
M550i pros
- as quick as f10 m5 (but i don't really care as i enjoy taking curves more) thx to xdrive
- modern interior - i really loved the g30 when i went to the showroom, compared to my f30 it's quite a leap ahead
Cons:
- with the M550i i already know i will want to get an aftermarket LSD, put f90 wishbones on the front axle to increase negative camber... f90 anti roll bars... so that'll cost me 3000-5000 extra and will probably not be as good as a real m5.

M5 pros:
- chassis: i think the m5 chassis is better suited to what i want, as confirmed by @Superjackson
- is a more exceptional car, although the f10 isn't considered a great m5 (but still very good) - i see even the limited series don't seem to go for a premium
Cons:
- very hard to find a blue one lots of grey and black - ok i know it's a minor point

All in all it seems m550i is good enough for me with the handling package, while m5 is probably a safer bet for chassis

Thanks!

In the end i got a m550i with 2VW « m selectdrive suspension », aka dynamic handling package with active roll bars and rear wheel steering - thanks Norris83 for pointing that out!

This thing is *extremely* capable, it corners very very well, stays glued to the road on bad country roads it’s amazing, i don’t regret not getting an f10 m5

I had similar choice and opted for M550 also as a DD it made more sense and interior (ZF8sp, back seats, software) were better. The F10/M5 is DCT and that coupled with older generation Turbo was what really pushed me into M550. Both were same mileage, and from depreciation and insurance cost the M550 was smarter choice coupled with Xdrive! If I were getting primarily track car, it wouldn’t be the M5 anyway.

Love the M550i. Great car. V8 Twin Turbo Grand Touring Missile and Occasionally will take to track. #550iFanBoy

Congratulations on the M550I. It's a great car! I honestly never felt like I needed more power for everyday driving.
