Issue with power steering wheel adjustment
So in the last several weeks the car will automatically move the steering wheel up when the car is parked and turned off like it's supposed to but when I get back in the wheel doesn't go back to where it should be once the car is started. If I hit the memory button on the door or manually press down on the adjustment button the steering wheel goes down just a small amount and then stops. If I keep hitting the door button or pressing the lever down I can eventually get it to where it needs to go with those slow movements but it's really annoying. Has anyone experienced this before and know what the most likely cause is? Thanks!

I'm having the exact same issue. I've complained to my dealership as I am still under warranty. Its been hit and miss for the past year and it hasn't been resolved. I just sent the dealership this information so lets see what happens.

Thanks for the reply. I am really interested in what they end up doing to fix it, sadly I'm out of warranty but would be good to at least know exact item and cost. I know Alexete above says it's really expensive to do where he's from, just hopeful it's not THAT bad. Please let me know what comes of it!

I had the same issue and found this document. I carefully put some WD40 or similar lubricants on the piece on the right of the steering wheel (you can see it from the top when the wheel is all the way out and the cover is up.). Then I bought the tool they are showing in the attached document and moved maybe a quarter to the right. I have done this last March and since then I didn't have the issue. The dealer quoted me $2700 to change the piece.

So finally got my car back, and will test. All has been working properly so far. Will continue to test. Also, I had no noise issues hence why the other fix never worked for my car. Some days it worked flawless for the entire day..
I'll keep you updated. |

Hope it helps. I dealt with this for the past year. When I read ALEXETE comments regarding the HAL sensor, I forwarded it to the service department and they replaced it which finally solved it. SO credits given to ALEXETE

I had the same issue... Steering column would raise to top position and wouldn't move back. Car was under CPO warrantee and - per dealer suggestion - i replaced the entire steering column (!). Costly repair, i'm sure but fortunately under warrantee. The BMW mechanic told me that they had seen (and replaced) a few steering columns already.
For those that are no longer under warrantee, i truly hope that Alexete's solution works. |

Thanks to b-rock's information I was able to repair it myself.
There were no parts replaced because the lock nut was just loose as shown in the PDF he posted. I wrote an article about the repair at the following URL. It is written in Japanese, so please use Chrome's translate function. https://minkara.carview.co.jp/userid...4175/note.aspx The work itself is not difficult, but you will need some tools. I bought a crows’ foot for the first time. Last edited by akataka; 09-15-2023 at 11:50 PM.. |
