Exhaust Burbling and Popping
I recently leased an 540i X Drive M Sport. Don't get me wrong, I love my car. The 540 is my DD and it fits the bill perfectly.
BUT..................... I did the BMW M track Day at Monticello. So I drove an M5 and M5 Competition. (On a track) Big Mistake-I felt like a little kid again. The biggest difference besides the Torque, speed and suspension was the exhaust note. (I am not modding this car bc its a lease and I have other toys-this needs to remain a reliable DD)The M cars were set up and we were not allowed to change any idrive settings. When you lift off the gas under hard acceleration the exhaust crackles and pops. Sound is amazing. Is there a setting in the sport mode or other menu on the 540I that would allow this to happen at all? I would love the option to have it, and at other times not have it happen. The M cars have an exhaust button but I am not sure that is what does it. Now all I need is the winning lotto numbers |

The new M850 also has the same exhaust sounds. I believe it is related to the deletion of one of the resonators that enhance the sound as compared to an M550.. On an 540 six, I' m not sure if that alone would do it.

Even with the MPPSK you have to push it pretty hard in Sport+ to get it to pop. It does snort a bit more on the upshift and certainly has a lot more of an aggressive tone, but it's never going to equal the likes of a V8.

You could get aftermarket exhaust installed, like Remus, that would definitely give you what you're looking for.
No big deal on a lease just replace it with the original before you return it (It's all clips, no welding). I did this on my M550i. This will cost somewhere in the Range of $2500-$3500. Another option and much cheaper would be to do a resonator delete, I've seen M550i's sound great after this but I'm not 100% sure how this would sound on a 540i. Should cost $200-$300. |

Seriously! Being a lease is no problem as long as you return it to stock at turn in.

Love the car. Would like more M5 Competition exhaust note. But I’m not Goingntk mid this car. . I’ve got other toys. Just really find myself choosing the 540 ix MSport over my other cars. Just love it.
It’s comfortable and fun and the tech is very useful and easy to use (apple car play and voice control. ) |

If you choose not to do it that's fine but there's no real reason not to. There are no warranty issues. There are no CELs. The only consideration is returning it to stock at lease return. |

I agree with your decision to leave it stock. Since it is a leased car, you need to return it as you received it, so you would have to replace a new aftermarket exhaust with the original one. An M performance exhaust costs about $2,200 or more to buy and have installed. You would eat a lot of that cost to return it to stock. I own my 540xi M Sport, and I had this done. Frankly, I am not that pleased with my decision. The M Sport exhaust, to my ears, has too much resonance or drone at certain rpm points and is especially loud and a bit unpleasant when it shifts, especially at moderate throttle. But that is only some of the time; when using the paddle shifters and playing around I like the sound a lot. I may actually return to stock and sell my M Sport exhaust, mostly because my wife doesn't like it. But we'll see. I will live with it a while still and leave her at home more frequently. --Bob
