Any thoughts n the Dinantronics X ?

I recently purchased a 2021 540i and am really enjoying the car but, like many others, I would like to “wake up” the motor a bit.

I have been trying to get information and feedback on the Dinantronics X plug in inline tuner. https://www.dinancars.com/products/s...arts/D440-0159 It is apparently a new product and I can’t find any reviews or feedback on the web. A local tuner says they have installed 3 units so far and the customers have been happy with the results.

Does anyone on this board have any experience with this product or any comments or thoughts on it versus other options.

Thanks

The Dinantronic X is a reliable tuner; it's a stage 1 piggyback that's easy to install and offers a few maps.

It offers a noticeable power increase for a more fun daily driving experience.

I have the Dinantronics V2 on my M550, which is the prior version to the X. The X replaced the V2. Essentially they are the same, both piggyback and both offer the same increase in performance. (the V2 add slightly more).

I paid almost $2,000 for mine because at the time, Dinan offered a warranty to back up the factory warranty if there was an issue the dealer blamed on the tune. In hindsight, I put too much weight on and paid too much money for the peace of mind. I say that because this is a conservative tune and mild by most standards. You will feel the difference, but it won't blow your doors off like a BM3 with Catless DP's. But it also won't stress your engine, throw codes, throw malfunction messages, throw CEL's, require the tuner to frequently jump in to patch something, etc.

$579 is a steal for 50+ more hp.

I wish they had a dyno chart showing 91 octane. That's all I have available in my area. Not really worth the $579 if it's only 20-30hp gain. I also would love to see some dragy numbers with the tune turned off and then back on. Looks like they drop a lot of HP and TRQ on the higher end of the chart??

I find their site confusing when it comes to performance gains. This was the first tune I ever did and I kind of jumped into it because it was "Dinan" and that meant something to me.

The tune comes with a jumper to turn it on and off. I really should pull the plug and drive without it for a while to feel the difference.

I do think I was under the assumption that I picked up 70-90hp with it. I think the new X offers less performance.

the only disadvantage of the JB4 vs. Dinan is the longer install / uninstall time

Unless you plan on doing it often, the JB4 is the best option

My understanding is it will void the OEM warranty. It’s a very simple install - do it yourself or an hour or less labour with a professional install.

I’m still considering this along with other options

There are no more warranties for Dinan products. They used to charge a lot more for their products because they backed up the factory warranty in the event BMW blames an issue on the tune. I paid $1,800 for my Dinan V2 tune because of the warranty protection. The Dinan X is only $579. They said they could not compete at their price point with warranty protection, so no more warranty protection from any Dinan tune.

Not quite true. Hard parts still carry the factory matching new car warranty unless they are designated a "race" product and require a fair amount of fiddling. On the software/tuning side we no longer offer a matching warranty on any of the inline tuners (piggybacks) - that ceased in ~January of 2021. Still offer a warrantied flash tune option (Dinan+), where applicable, however.

That said, we currently do not offer a flash for the M550i so for that particular model the only Dinan engine tuning options would not carry the factory matching warranty.

Understood, I was speaking to tunes. Everything else is low risk from a BMW factory warranty perspective. I am curious though, are you saying that "if" the full Dinan catback exhaust I just put in through a Dinan authorized shop somehow was deemed to be related to an engine failure (unlikely but play along with me), then Dinan would step in and foot the bill?

I actually like your new pricing with no warranty protection. I wish you had it when I was buying because I SO overpaid for your piggyback.

Yes, that is what I am saying but that said there is no way an axleback or x-pipe for that matter is ever going to cause an engine failure. The only time an exhaust is ever going to be singled out (albeit a stretch and more of a scapegoat) is really in the event of a catalytic convertor failure but given we do not touch the cast (and only modifiy after that) it isn't something that a Dinan exhaust is ever going to saddled with.

Understood, just using it as an example, a bad one though!
