Audi are already at level 3 now in the new A8 and Tesla are promoting level 4 in less than 2 years.

G30 LCI would probably have the same engines but less polluting but probably with sharper bumpers, updated light clusters, nicer interior and upgraded idrive and some options would have become free. Patience is a virtue.
By the time the G30 LCI gets here, it will only be a year or two from that point before the successor comes along - maybe you should wait for that?

Meantime, life is passing you by.

And yes, it was a satire

There is a huge gap between level 3 & 4. At level 4 manufactures will need to bear full responsibility when the systems are engaged for long periods of time. Even at L3, Audi shrugs off this responsibility by disengaging the system whenever there is slight variation to which the system is designed for. Arguably there isn't a huge leap between L2 & L3.

As for Tesla, we all know how their promises work. They hype things far too much that in the end damages the chances of orderly transition to autonomous driving. They've been talking about their L2 cars as if they are fully autonomous cars. Let's hope their enthusiasm or arrogance (not sure which one it is) will not make lawmakers put in place road blocks to autonomous driving.

Really?

Come on, you are taking this too seriously, they are just cars. I am saving £££. Don't forget I am currently riding a G30. Changing a new car less than a year old for another car of the same model with a bigger engine would be seen as being financially reckless by many. Life is not all about cars.

There are 2 levels of automation in my mind.

1. What the E60 had. Traction, ABC, ESC, parking sensors and camera

2. Where I can get drunk and have the car drive me home. Or where I can go for a sleep, or where I can get it to drop me off at the airport, kids off at school or where I can summon it from a free car park to come and collect me. Until it gets to that stage it is pointless and downright dangerous as it encourages people to become complacent.

I've got three words on this:

Traffic jam assist!

From BMW UK website Stock 540i (Acceleration 0–62mph 4.8s) vs stock m240i (Acceleration 0–62mph 4.6s).

I know you have installed MPPSK which obviously would make it faster but by how much?

M 240i is 0-62 4.8 secs.
NOT 4.6, check it.
I would think the 540i MS with kit is about 4.4 to 62 now maybe quicker, it does feel as quick as the 550i I had
This is the M240i stats

M240i convertible 4.8s, m240i coupe 4.6s. Just checked BMW UK again.
You check as well.

Your mppsk would obviously make your car faster

However the torque for mppsk 540i increases to 500nM from 450nM whilst the torque for stock 240i coupe is 500nM with the same power as stock 540i thus the better acceleration.

Well it doesn't matter as far as we enjoy our cars.

I have attached a screenshot from BMW build your m240i page

There is no doubt that the 520D will be the biggest seller in the UK market.

Other people (myself included) have a different set of priorities. It's horses for courses, which is why manufacturers offer choice in their model range and specifications.

Is it "worth it" to make the transition from the 520D to the 530D? As above, those who chose the 520D clearly think it isn't. Those that chose the 530D clearly think it is.

Value judgements are, by their very nature, a very personal thing.
I have had the 20d for in two cars in a row. This is my last time. Next time I'm getting a 6 cylinder BMW. While the 20d is brilliantly versatile both in power end fuel economy, it's not a luxurious engine. I drive uphill and through several roundabouts everyday and find the engine laggy unless I put it in sports mode. From stand still it's not easy to drive smoothly as max torque come all at once rather than build progressively from 0 rpm.

What's worst? It's a noisy engine with lots or vibration. Driving the 30d is night and day. I have sampled the engine in both the G12 and G30 and the creamy power delivery is beautiful. At speeds above 50mph there's plenty of overhead left for brisk overtaking or joining from a slip road with confidence. The muted diesel clatter and reduced engine vibration makes the cabin a nice place too.

And yes, I've driven the G30 20d and to me the 30d makes the car feel special - especially if you add adaptive dampers.
