Hi folks. I wanted to confirm my understanding of the CPO warranty.
BMW original warranty is 4yr/50k whichever occurs first. Standard CPO warranty provides another 1yr/unlimited mileage I see this quoted as "5 years at unlimited mileage" but the two are not equivalent when you meet the 50k limit inside of 4yrs. Let's say I purchase a 2018 540 CPO with 10k miles (in service date 4/2017). I'm a high mileage driver and will hit 50k mark about 20mo into my ownership. My understanding was that I would have the balance of the factory warranty until I hit 50k, and then for a final year have unlimited mileage, as below- Purchase car 5/2019 with 10k miles Hit 50k miles at 1/2021 Get another year of unlimited miles until 1/2022 Under the 5yr/unlimited mileage terms, I would get unlimited mileage until 4/2022 Which of the two is correct? Thank you |

CPO experts, please enter
Purchase car 5/2019 with 10k miles
Hit 50k miles at 1/2021 Get another year of unlimited miles until 1/2022 This is the way BMW does it. I hate how it's setup this way, Audi works their warranty the exact same way. Mercedes is different where it's completely unlimited. The second option you stated is how Mercedes offers their unlimited warranty. |

However, this really only works if BMW knows precisely when you hit 50k miles- how do they know? Do you need to report it so that the clock starts on that additional (unlimited mileage) year? |

That's a really good question, although I believe there is a service due at 50K. Which means whether you report it or not, the computer has already logged that data. |

I thinks that's why when we initially start our cars, on the dash there is a sign that pops up saying service has been due since XYZ date or it can also show the mileage you've gone over since service due date. However, regardless of which one it shows in each car, once they scan our key fobs at BMW, both information is available to them. |

"The CPO coverage ends 5 years after the original in service date, regardless of when the factory warranty expires." "With a CPO, you have coverage for 5 years from the original in service date with unlimited mileage." Coincidentally, I recently test drove an A6 and the dealer there too had the same understanding of their CPO. Are these guys not understanding their own CPO terms? |

For Audi I've contacted few dealerships in Minnesota, Illinois, and Atlanta. All 3 confirmed that the one year starts after 50K. For BMW I've only inquired in Illinois. I didn't bother checking in with other dealers. I'm curious to know for future reference and will recheck for my own knowledge. |

Just confirmed with BMW about the 1 year unlimited mileage. I would ask to speak to the financial department at whichever BMW dealership your purchasing from, as they have the most accurate information related to warranty. Good luck |

4yr/50k miles, whichever occurs first. Then 1 additional year of unlimited mileage. I wonder if there is so much ambiguity at the dealership level because they don't know when you hit 50k, making the exact policy difficult to implement. Unless BMW knows exactly when you hit 50k, how can they start the clock on that additional year of unlimited mileage? On the other hand, it should be very easy for the vehicle to log the exact date you hit 50k, which should be accessible by the service dept the next time you come in for service. Short of this, I don't know how they can implement 4yr/50k + 1yr/unlimited. |

For BMW to know when you hit 50k, you'd have to report to the service center at exactly 50k. |
