"iconic" definition from Vocabulary.com:

Iconic often describes something or someone that is considered symbolic of something else, like spirituality, virtue, or evil and corruption.

I think this one tends toward the "evil" or "corruption" side of "iconic".

Perhaps they should be called "Ironic Glow Kidney Lights"...because if they are to facilitate ingress and egress of the passengers...why are you illuminating the front of the car? Who climbs in and out of the vehicle through the hood? . That's what the "welcome lights" that shine along the side of the car are for.

If you're going to illuminate the hood area...why not design a place for a light underneath the hood (like back in the 70s/80s) so that if you need to check something in the engine bay at night...you can actually see what you're doing. Similar to the reason why there's trunk lights.

My 2nd choice for a name would be "Pretentious Glow Kidney Lights". My 3rd choice for a name would be "Ostentatious Glow Kidney Lights?.

If you park in your own garage and don't want to turn on the light in garage I can see this being semi useful...

That's a good point.

But you can also use the pathway lighting or welcome lighting features that's already standard.

The pathway lights are activated by flicking the turn indicator stalk when you turn the car off. You can go into iDrive to change the length that the lights remain on.

The welcome lights can be activated by pressing the unlock button on the remote fob (at least on the e & f series that have remotes)...and this feature also has optional selections in iDrive.

Well since BMW is trying to catch MBenz sales lead they need to copy their glowing emblem. They have a star, we have bars.

I'd rather have those kidney grills in particular light up, then some of these other freaking ugly ass kidney grills that are connecting in the middle and are getting huge like a bloody Bucktooth beaver.

Have they seen how bright the Corona/halo lights are by themselves? They light up in front of the car quite a bit already. Do they really need a glow grill on entering/exiting the car too? Might as well put a big led Lightbar up front!

LMAO, so true. The vehicle imo is a night club as it is. BMW don't mess with perfect.

I thought the illuminated parts were stupid.. especially on the silver arrow. Looks like BMW wants to follow suit in that department. I would have stuck with the old grill and saved millions on the R&D.

Throw a $10 LED strip in there and save the $604 dollars

This is all bimmerpost's fault. We said 'BMW, your grills cannot get douchier".

Their response: hold my beer.

Right.

My "BMW" Puddle Lights installed on my ///M were $11 on eBay.

What BMW should have done is actually make the slats or bars in between themselves illuminate subtlety, NOT from behind the grill which looks annoying and cheap.

I mean it does exude a certain opulence in pics but in real life? Saw it on the X6 and it was kinda whatevs. And Benz did it first. Then Mazda.

Can we do backlit roundels next?

The glowing "star" on MB cars is tacky as all hell. This isn't much better.

Another "feature" to appease the Chinese market perhaps? Oh, BMW.

The more I read Bmw news these days, The more I miss my E46 manual coupe!

Does not get cheesier than this. Even Kia doesn't do this to its cars. Do they?

Can I also order some under car lighting? Why stop with the grill? Maybe have it dance to beat on the stereo?
