I prefer the 5 series on the E class, which I found the right car for a retired person......

Should have been compared to the E43 AMG, NOT the E400 since an M Sport version was used for the G30.

Need to see them in person. Judging by the photos(exterior) I'd say G30.
If we compare non amg and m versions.

smelly load is that dreadful interior

Will be interesting to see what the journos say when they compare the new 5 with the 2nd gen Jag XF, however
E Class has a lot of similarities with the upper class ultimate luxury car like Maybach. It is like you're getting a very, very expensive vehicle for a lot, a lot less money. I think the people who enjoy driving with sportiness and dynamics will choose the 5 and those enjoy travelling from point a to b with comfort, elegance, and luxury will pick the E.

I'm sure you're right

I rather like what BMW 5 Series project manager, Wolfgang Hacker, had to say: "If you close your eyes, first you will think it is a 3 Series to drive but on the highway it will feel like a 7 Series... That's what we wanted to achieve with the new model."

Looking forward to a test drive, although it's a shame that they've made it bigger as the Touring will follow suit and end up being too big to handle really well

The g30 seems to be leaps ahead as far as looking more cohesive and more modern. Assuming it looks better in person as most bmws do
+1
My friend just picked up e class. When he pulled up i really thought it was c class. Not to mention that he is tired of it already.... he was telling me how it does not drive like his F10.

Front end looks aggressive on e class but rear end just doesn't work at all.

This is exactly right. G30 looks much better IMO. Not a fan of the new Benz designs at all other than the S-class coup which is absolutely beautiful.

The E class looks 8 years old.
The 5 series looks like it's ready for its LCI.

This is regarding exterior styling only.

I'm not saying each manufacturer doesn't want to sell the highest margin vehicles, of course profit is still the goal, but the optics of it all - it doesn't matter which series you buy/drive, it's still a BMW.
My hypothesis is that CPO profits in some part drive the conservative design evolution. BMW FS and dealers make more on used cars and warranties than on new cars. Avoiding dramatic design changes for volume models makes used cars feel less outdated, and therefore more desirable. (Of course, a market flooded with subsidized leases works against my hypothesis.)

Curious about the quality of materials?
Hopefully they didn't cheapen out under the act of making it lighter.

If the rear of the Benz is saggy, does that make the rear of BMW's flat? Its the same, flat, smushed look.

There is just no comparison the new 5 makes the E-class look upright/frumpy and dull whilst the 5 looks crisp/sporty/low and wide.

On the inside, the chintzy, column shift equipped Merc is trying too hard, nothing matches and your eye is constantly drawn to over-designed elements that don't sit comfortably with the flow of the cabin. (silly sized air vents as an example) The glass panel looks like someone forgot to design an instrument binnacle so threw that on instead.

The BMW looks fresh and clean, whilst embracing the move towards digital displays it does it in keeping with what a driver focused interior should look like, sporty and functional. Lots of surface shaping and different materials keep the whole thing interesting as well.

The rear of the g30 looks so bad it almost makes me cry. But I'd still take it over the C, ops, E class.

5 has better tech?

5 series has cross traffic assist with only a WARNING (according to their ad on youtube)
E-class has cross traffic assist with AUTOBRAKE

5 series has remote control parking, but only forwards and backwards
E-class has remote control PARALLEL parking

BMW Autopilot is only 15 seconds (if the time is the same as in 7 series)
In Mercedes E-class, the autopilot can drive for 60 SECONDS

And those are not even the only examples. It really seems like the 5 series brings nothing new to the table at all.

Remote view and gesture control? Who gives a shit. Mercedes E-class has true innovations like PRE-SAFE SOUND and PRE-SAFE IMPULSE (i know they are pretty minor, but still innovations)

My next car could be the G30, but i'm very disappointed. The interior looks like the current 3-series. It's horrible. From the outside it looks like a facelift, but still ok.

The key is ridiculously huge. But with the E-class, you can open the doors and start the engine with your Smartphone. And you remote park with your phone as well. No need for a key the size of child's fist.

Please give some examples where the 5 series delivers better technology?
