I also notice that we in Euroland get a drivers knee airbag for the first time, although it doesn't appear to have been of great benefit here.(although driver still came away ok none the less)

My dealer told me it fitted as standard when I picked up, and I notice it has the stereo cameras upfront. I get the occasional red car warning symbol pop up on the display, and frankly it's hard to know what triggers it as I didn't seem to be in imminent danger of a collision. I purposely got close to cars in front a few times but there wasn't a peep out of the system. According to the manual, the flashing red car symbol is the first stage ( in my case it disappeared before I did anything) and then comes an audible waning followed emergency breaking. However I am loathe to take the word of a salesman on something so fundamental as this ( I hope I never get into a situation where it's actually needed) so it would be good if somebody could provide some clarity on this....

Ehm. No, it's the other way around.
Bigger, heavier engine means shorter deformation zone and more mass being pushed into the drivers legs. They of course test with the version achieving the highest score. It's not like bmw don't know in advance how it will perform. |

I expect therefore the advantage of one feature (more crumple) is counteracted by the other (lighter) and vice versa. Unless of course it's a solid object in which case lighter would be easier to stop and momentum would be a disadvantage! |

My point is that the test result is valid for 4 cylinder versions only. If I were BMW I would test the version that would produce the highest score. Anything else would just be stupid. So based on that I would assume the 6 cylinder versions to perform worse. |

Good too know...but I've never considered safety a priority in any car I bought...more interested in the performance/fun aspect but good to know BMW is concerned about me getting home safe. Now...time to take my Z4M Coupe for a spin! Happy Easter all!!

For anyone else who wondered I think this is that option that tenses seatbelts and rolls windows down/up on accidents and brings car to stop etc.

I don't think the manufacturers put these cars forward for testing, I think Euroncap buy the cars so there is no chance of of any tweaking.
Just recently the Ford Mustang was tested and scored badly as Ford decided to not include some safety equipment as they thought it would not be tested - at least that is how the story goes. So in this case I guess the 520d was chosen possibly simply as it might be the best seller. |
