3.2kwh is a good start. Sounds slow (as BEVs load at a wallbox with 11/22 and even more kWh / 530e only with 3.7kwh!), but e.g. an i3 with a 33kwh battery would also be charged over night by this.

So the real questions are:
- When to other PHEV (330e, 740e, X5 4.0e, i8) and BEV (i3) get this?
and even more important
- Will this be a standard followed by other manufacturers?

If the plate is only for BMW and e.g. Mercedes brings out a different one not being compatible at least I would still stay on a standardized wallbox instead.
I agree, i think actually the car manufactors are pretty slow using this tech.
Once again the mobile industry have done the R&D development and cost, as to how it should be put into action.
Samsung have benefitted from this tech a few years already.

It is not a tech that can be retrofitted into previous Hybrid vehicles by the sound of it, or i3īs.
And itīs not a solution thatīs here within almost a year.
Surely this is a tech that will evolve and be more powerful within a few years.

In Norway, several EV cars are being sold with 11/22Kw Wallchargers, and also being mounted, not as a option, but standard - obviously the manufacture have baked it into the price.
But as a buyer, you should have the means to use a EV with no hassle also. This is the next step, and it should be sold within the bundle. It makes the EV and Hybrid that much easier to live with from day to day.

This doesn't really impress much at all. Just makes charging your hybrid even lazier than before. Some may argue that is luxury nowadays, but I see it as a half-assed solution.
Seriously? Yes, it?s not perfect, but power goes over distance by wire. You don?t have to plug-in a cable. That?s very nice compared to park, get out, grab a cable and plug in + remove the cable before driving.
Imagine a standard over all electrified cars and parking spaces having this build in.

Flamethrowers come out whenever I bring up the inconvenience of the additional steps involved with charging your car every day. This announcement brings me a small sense of vindication.

But what is the cost? Plugging in is not that big of a deal, though takes about 8 hours on a level one. The only thing nice about this I would say is the time. It is easier to plug in multiple vehicles than move pad or cars.

Guess snow will be melted by heat from the engine.

Now install these at every set of traffic lights and make them about 50 foot long.

And entire highways? I hope I am not at traffic lights long enough for a quick charge to make a difference.

True - depends on the town I guess. You could just do one lane I guess on highways instead of all of them.

You have a wireless pad and it charges at same rate as your level 1 charger?

I wonder how practical this is in the real world, when the chassis get covered with road dirt, mud and all, will the coils work, but great kit, will save us having to plug our X5 every night.

this indeed will be helpful for those who park in cramp garages. Case in point:

I thought of buying a Porsche PEV. The charging port is on the driver side. My garage is very cramped. I got stuff stored along the side. If I bought a Porsche, I would have had to reroute power to the driver side of my garage wall which would have been a PITA, and with the charging dock from Porsche, would have given me 1 feet of space to squeeze by, and impossible to load my kid in the driver side rear door. Alternative would have been to use the existing electrical hookups on the passenger side and then pass the cable behind the car....except, I wouldn't be able to walk behind the car with my garage door closed. This solution would have been perfect for me.

Umm, no. Unfortunately, the levels of complexity for the auto application are a few higher than a lower power cell phone charge. It's not just the high power level that is a challenge but alignment of the car to the pad is critical, the gap is critical, where in the power conversation system do you put the "wireless".... then there is the question of what happens if your cat crawls under the car and sits on the pad...
