I hate the orange interior lights.
I test drove a 2018 530 and the interior lights were white. I then found a great deal on a 2017 530 and took the deal but the interior lights are the old orange style. I'm just venting a little.
I am not talking about the ambiant iighting. I am talking about the lighting of the center climate control display ect. Just three years I am telling myself. Just three years... |

I have a 2018 and I'm pretty certain my lights are orange too. You can change ambient lighting colors only (gold, orange, blue, green, white and purple).

If you are talking about a 2017 F10, then yes the lighting of the climate control cluster is orange.
The main instrument cluster has white numbers during the day and orange by night. The G30 has white numbers in both areas at all times (with the ambient/mood lighting set to what you wish). Ironically, I wish the numbers in the main cluster in my G30 would change to orange at night... |

Interesting reasoning behind the orange lights at night, it's proven to be less strain on the eyes. BMW has done this for years, it's not just a signature BMW look, it's done for good reason. I'm sure folks know this, but I like the way it shows BMWs driver focus.

As other posters have mentioned, the color is white during the day and orange at night for visibility.
Having white instrument lighting at night would be idiotic as it puts strain on the eye. Why do you think overnight flights are called "redeye"? The instruments are all backlit in an orange/red light to reduce eyestrain. Ford uses white backlighting because they don't care about ergonomics. If you think white looks cool, go with an American car |

Thanks guys. Funny that I have only drove the car at night since I got it lmao. My 2013 335 was always orange thats whyni assumed that. I wonder if this can be changed via coding.

OP this is not new. It has been like this since forever. From your profile, you have or currently own a BMW? I am not sure why this surprises you. Also you should see a doctor and optometrist. Doctor because you are crying over this.. as I am typing this, maybe a psychologist. A optometrist because you haven't notice this until now. I want to downvote this thread. I just wasted time typing this but I have no life so thanks.

Orange/red tones help keep you alert and there is less physical change needed in your eyes as you look at any instruments lit in such tones and then into dark surroundings, and vice versa. Pioneered in German U:boats, I believe, but I may be wrong (been a long time since I was at university!) |

My instrument cluster stays white all the time (day and night). Unlike in F10 where it would turn orange when lights were on. However, climate control display does change from white to orange at night. I do not have 6WB.
I watched a few youtube videos with G30 night drives and I dont see instrument cluster in orange. Numbers around the gauges remain white at night. Are you guys saying your G30 instrument cluster actually changes to orange at night ? Just like in F10 ?

The instrument cluster doesn't go orange, it has its own 'night' mode |

My bad. You're right. OP's initial questions was in-fact about the climate control display NOT about the main instrument cluster. Thx.
Judging by youtube videos of the 7 and the 5 series fully digital cluster, numbers still stay white at night.

Not at all pure cost cutting exercise with our 2017 X5 you get a choice of 4 colours or more. the only focus is on the profit margins they making.

That would be a strange decision for cost cutting, as there is zero cost to make a digital display change colors. Simply programming. It's not like the massive $0.25 they save by skipping the felt lining on the driver's side storage bin!

My mistake, I thought this was in reference to ambient lighting.
But never the less I find BMW always on the down side with options, your get 7 different colours to choose with a Ford Mustang, this was available with the model prior to the current one. for god sake the current 3 series only got the digital dials option with he face lift this year when Audi have a display with the SAT nav maps showing on the dials side. with our X5 2017 model, we tried desperately to go for an individual colour available with the x1 but with no avail, even when ready to pay any price. I find them year in year out more and more limited with options even when ready to part with cash, pure volume production behaviour and setup. |
