P0420 code - 2018 G30 PHEV
Happy New Year all! I have a 2018 PHEV G30, B46 engine with 95k miles. After a short drive that was almost all electric driving, this code came in. There has never been any engine missing, rough running, etc. I wonder if anyone other hybrid owners have had a similar experience? Perhaps it’s due to the fact that the engine can be called on to start cold at 70mph?
Any thoughts? |

Well first you have posted a generic OBD2 code, so in the DME (engine computer) there is a more specific BMW based code. But basically that is a CAT efficiency code, why the CAT isn't working anymore could be a few reasons. The picture shows 1/3 stored codes, care to share the other 2?
That code doesn't just pop up after a short drive, we are talking days and drive cycles before it pops up so don't spend a lot of mental energy trying to link it to a specific driving situation. 1) A sensor is faulty and it can't correctly determine the CAT effectiveness. But usually the computer is smart enough to pick up on a errant sensor and give a sensor related code. 2) The CAT is actually not performing it's function. Burning OIL is a common way a CAT goes bye bye, but it might be something else. You are well outside the 8year/80k emissions warranty so you need to either dig into the problem with a better scan tool that handles BMW or find a pro. |
