Hey there. Finally got the invoice to upload. The section discussing the LED has the part number. There was only one part number. They mentioned the LED lights worked but the tube was cracked and prevented light from coming through. Hope this helps.

Has anyone used their aftermarket warranty to get this fixed? I just bought a 2017 540ix and the passenger upper light is exact same as everyone else with ends not lit.

I wonder if CarMax 90 day warranty would cover this repair or if it is only for major system failures?

Yep, I got mine fixed with the extended warranty that wasn't from BMW. It's an exclusionary policy and this was covered! However, this was on my M550i. I'm purchasing an 540i as a daily driver on Monday and it has the same issue but in different areas. I'll have to get an extended warranty for this and hope it's covered. The only thing you can do is ask them if it's covered.

If you are out of warranty, you can source the used trim and slowly drill the plastic welds holding the trim and replace it. Unfortunatly only way.
Can you share the part number(s) please?

I had the top strip replace/fixed and now the section under that that lights downward above the glovebox is very dim. Time to take it again.

What do you mean by readdress the ambient light? I also had my dash trim changed out because of dim lighting but my ambient light that lights the glovebox still seems dim. Maybe they didn’t readdress them?

There is a test plan that needs to be performed when any ambient lights are replaced. The test plan basically reinitializes all of them and readdresses all the locations of the lights. If you had the dash trim replaced, the two lights would have also been replaced.

Have my car at dealer in Tucson to get this fixed and the tech said it is operating within specifications and nothing needs replaced. I had to find pictures on the internet of working upper lights, email to the service advisor, and ask if the tech and service manager still feel mine is operating correctly. 10 min later I got a call saying the tech was working up a quote for repair.

I understand I am late to the game in getting this replaced in a 2017 540, but do I really have to prove them wrong to get an estimate for replacement?

I bought my car through CarMax so they are paying to get the light repaired (est $1004) along with some other misc items through their 90 day 4K mile warranty.

They said the same exact thing to me.
If they look at a similar car on the lot and if they look at the image of the ambient lighting when you go on the ambient lighting options. It shows that the light should be a solid light.
It took a second look for them to finally admit its not working properly

Light replaced and now can barely been seen in daytime (even with dark tinted windows and tinted windshield on black interior). It looks like the ends are actually lighting up but can barely see it. All other lights are visible just not the one they replaced.

Can anyone provide the exact instructions I need to tell the dealer to fix this?

It really sucks only having one dealer in this city.

After dark I verified strip does light up end to end now. Still dimmer than the rest of the lights. Also 1/2 color and 1/2 white when switching colors to white over color. I sent dealer info in this post about readdressing lights,, so hopefully they can figure it out. I also sent a pic of dash light with left blue and right white, so they know it is not working correctly.

I had a similar issue - and what freshxdough mentioned is the key to the problem.
Even after they replace the light strip, they have to re-initialize to get it to work correctly...

I passed my dealer all of the information from this post early this morning and about 30 min ago I got a reply from the Service Manager stating, "there is an assignment service function that needs to be run". She also said they want to check the connectors to make sure something isn't swapped.

Dropped off the car again today. Working directly with Service Manager now. Showed her in person issue with ambient light. She went and got the lead tech and showed him. He said he was aware there is a readdressing that needs to be done. Guess he definitely wasn't the tech that installed the new light and knew nothing about it.

Was this fixed by having them readdress the lights?

Can you post a picture of what it looks like fixed? Would like a reference point. My dash is also dim on one side; unfortunately I'm out of warranty.

Thanks

I had some photos saved from when I got mine fixed, here's a quick comparison. Hopefully it helps you.

Got a Warranty - BMW won't fix

BMW Rockville, MD will NOT fix mine despite being under warranty. They state that the warranty doesn't cover light bulbs and there is no fault code so they can't diagnose the issue - I'm considering a new dealership.
