Drivers side DRL discoloration

Hi all,

I got my light module replaced on the drivers side. The DRL was working again with a bit of discoloration. A few days later it looks like its back to being completely off. The shop that worked on it told me the light tube (or something like that) is burned. I’ll need to replace the whole drivers side headlight assembly to get the DRL functioning right.

A new headlight assembly is $3500 from BMW. I really don’t want to go that route. I was thinking of grabbing a used one off eBay or and after market option.

For those of you that had this issue, what did you end up doing?

There is a TSB from BMW for the repair steps without the light being replaced.

I'm a bit confused here.. they did do that repair. The light module was replaced. At first it was working with a little bit of discoloration.. now its back to being completely off just a few days later.

Was it at a dealership or somewhere else? You mentioned a "shop".

The TSB notes a repair plan and procedure that I'd press them to do. If the BMW did the repair I'd press them for goodwill or BMWNA for it knowing the TSB clarifies that this is a known issue. If the "shop" is a third party then BMW can't help there, obviously...

It was at a local BMW Indy shop

They may not have done everything BMW specified. The TSB notes a process.

If they said they did that repair you’ll need to dig into exactly what that means or take it to BMW directly.

If it is in the replace headlight section of the TSB you would need to engage a dealership if you hoped to get goodwill from them or BMWNA. But I imagine that gets easier if you use the dealership already or are very close to warranty expiration.

I am afraid I do not have good news.
Most likely optic tube got fried and melted thus poor light output.
Both headlight went that way on my 2018.
I tried to salvage headlight, first case I grinded off damaged tube end with Dremel tool, it restored light output to 90% but ‘repair’ lasted one day new LED module melted endo of optic tube.
Second headlight - I drilled out dark sport - end result was 95% brightness restored, lasted about one month, melted tube end anyways.
Solution is new LED module 12$ for circuit board on Ebay, 25, complete LED module and new headlight, nowadays 550$ I could find few to choose from, full LED, Adaptive.
