Finally got around to this. Here is my fuel economy for the life of the vehicle, since I last refueled, and since I began my work week on Monday.

BTW, Eco Pro gave me no real mpg advantage on the highway but had the disadvantage of making the response a bit sluggish, so I just kept it in Comfort all the way with a few bursts of sport in between. On the other hand, going from 55-60 mph to 70+ mph had a huge impact on efficiency.

Elevation changes and traffic obviously make a difference. I’ll get an idea of my highway gas mileage in a couple weeks. The B58 in the 540 would get 500+ easy, even with elevation change and driving fast. I’ll be on a flat, open road on my upcoming trip but I will definitely not be driving for fuel economy It is the first (short) road trip in the M550 after all.

Yup Eco Pro is best used in city traffic, that's where the best gains are seen IME. I sometimes switch to it in high traffic situations not for mpg reasons but to prevent constant transmission shifts with the hope that it will help prolong the life of the transmission. On the highway, Eco Pro isn't worth the trade offs.

I don't understand those who buy large-engined vehicles and then mince about gas mileage.
Just drive it. Drive it hard. Enjoy it. Eco Pro is a sin against god.

Some of us do it for the sake of data and to marvel at the engine's capabilities...on both ends of the spectrum. Anyone can build a gas guzzling V8, what's so special about that. It's fun (at least for me) to also see how lean the machine can be.

Agreed I'm not concerned with gas mileage but am just impressed overall with how well it does.

I'm guessing most of us didn't walk in on a whim and buy an M550i. We went through the five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance) regarding the mpg numbers long before we signed the dotted line. There's always someone on mpg threads lamenting at the discussion though, and missing the point.

For me, manmaths justified it
I knew the v8 would consume more fuel and as I’m not a high mileage driver (about 5000 or so miles a year) the cost of fuel ( which ain’t cheap here in the U.K.!) wasn’t a huge factor But it’s nice to know that I’m not going to be spending all my time filling it up So I see it as a valid item for discussion Just shows how efficient it is and not much worse than the 540 it replaced which itself was also a very good car and engine |

Just as a side note, to piggy back this comment - I agree on the 540 and B58 engine. I’d say the biggest compliment I can give it is that after driving the M550 for a few weeks now, I have lost zero love for the 540. I’d drive another one in a heartbeat. I would recommend it to anyone, all day long.

Yeh agree
It’s really not much behind the v8 In fact on my last drive which was not particularly sporty but certainly not hanging around and with some music on quite loud , I had the thought that this could have easily have been the 540 |

I’d appreciate your comment but you hurt my feelings in the other thread.

I got 30 MPG in a recent road trip of 500-ish miles, on one tank with about 2 gallons left. I expected better, but then the car is still pretty new (2K miles) and I did romp down on it several times to, um... merge safely.

Well now that my 550 is essentially run having passed 1200 miles, as an experiment I tried to see what I could get out it economy wise and managed to beat my previous best.
This time I got 39.8 mpg imperial I saw 42mpg before coming off the motorway This was just a bit of fun on the m25 and m40 and obviously not a typical drive but having said that it’s not that difficult to do. Constant speed is the key I wasn’t in a rush and you can’t rush on these routes due to numerous speed cameras Very inpressive. |
