Drive mode "memory" between 2 trips?

2022 M550i, not running any tune/flash or custom coding. The car always defaults to Comfort mode at the start of a new trip. However, I've noticed several times since ownership (~18 months) that it seems to randomly remember my last drive mode when starting a new trip right after a short stop (10 mins at a gas station, for example). This behavior doesn't appear consistent; sometimes it remembers the previous drive mode, other times it defaults to Comfort, about a 50/50 split. I think it must have something to do with the sequence of how I park and exit the vehicle, like how it can affect the radio staying on or not. Couldn't find what I needed in a quick search, any ideas on what causes this?

PS: I've noticed this quite regularly in my '22 M550i, but not once in the '20 M340i I had for 3 years.

What is the sequence of events?
I’ve a 2023 m550 originally with 2022/11 software and now 2023/11
I’ve not noticed that myself
Thinking what my sequence is..
Radio off
Into park
Parking brake on
Engine off
Exit car
Lock car

Drive mode would have been eco pro individual or sport individual

ASS is always off

Had the car from new? Any coding?
Any software updates applied , what’s current version?

Any difference to my sequence?

Is ASS off?

Odd though

First and only owner, no tunes or coding. Current sw is 11/2023.50. I always drive Sport or Sport+, so never manually turn of ASS. Exit sequence is always: e-brake on, footbrake release, into Park, turn off car, exit.

Rocket455 My understanding is that the car defines a "new trip" as its first use after at least four hours of being off. So for stops of less than four hours, it will remember the settings from what it believes is the current trip. I'm not sure if you can force the car to start a new trip or change the four-hour behavior through coding. Does this explain the behavior you are seeing?

Interesting, was unaware about the 4-hour mark. However, the thing is the inconsistency: about half the time with my short pitstops (10-15 mins at a gas station), the car will remember the previous drive mode, but other times it defaults to comfort. Also noteworthy is that the pitstop itself is a fairly consistent routine: the first drive of the day is almost always to my local Shell to get my coffee in the morning, which is about 1 mile/5 mins away, so driving distance/time/style is not really a variable here. Not seeing this as a problem that needs to be solved, just curious to see why/how the car decides on this.

I’m definitely going to give this a go and take note of the mode. I don’t recall it ever doing that to be honest though.
