2021 Auto start stop ... question in regards to missing on/off button

After recently learning from another post that there is no button to turn off the auto start/ stop feature in the 2021 Update (not sure if this is only for the 530 and 540 models) I wanted to know if anyone by any chance knows if bmw possibly moved the ability to turn it off and on in the idrive menus.

I normally don’t shut mine off except on hot summer days where the AC goes to half speed when it’s off or on really cold days when the heat slows down.

It would be really strange of bmw to take away the ability to turn it off

It is only removed on the 540i w/ the 48V Mild Hybrid System.

only 540i has 48V mild hybrid? no idea what's BMW's logic with that (instead across all line up)

I agree. I had to go back and check as I thought I read it as across the entire lineup. A shame as they went from a pretty consistent feature set across the 5 series to being very model specific with the LCI.

Jeez I did not know they took away the whole button to turn off Auto Start Stop in the 540. Are you sure? Seems crazy not to be able to turn that off in certain situations.

Can put it into sport mode for that... and tbh the auto stop start is pretty seamless. The biggest annoyance used to be when you are inching into a busy intersection and the engine stops and you lose acceleration right when you need to nudge in. You don't really feel that anymore - it's not perfect but it's much better.

Ditto ASS being deactivated in SPORT mode. It also is deactivated when you move the gear shift lever over into the "transmission" sport mode (M/S gate on the console gear shifter) on my F series BMWs...which I find easier & quicker to do than pressing the driving experience switch/button to move the car into SPORT mode. Moving the gear shift lever can be done just by feel alone...no need to look for the button and make sure you are selecting SPORT instead of SPORT+ etc...just reach over and push the gear shift lever into the M/S gate...and the car won't shut off.

I just took delivery of a 2021 M550i this week. The auto engine stop can be turned off each time the car is started by pressing the button just below the large start/stop button. In my previous, car, an Audi S6, this feature can be turned permanently off in the car settings. I have not found this same ability in the M550i MMI system.
I find it annoying to have to press of the auto stop off button each time that I start the car.

Bud, congrats on the new car!

You can easily code this option on the car using Bimmercode.

The ASS on BMW is worlds better than it was when first released, but I find on my car that it tends to stop the engine a half second too soon, so that the car kind of lurches on a stop. Otherwise it works pretty well, although BTH I leave it off all the time unless I'm at a light that I know will take a while to change, and it's not too hot outside (i.e. don't need A/C).

Bud.....first, great looking car! A couple thoughts: I'll be "bimmercoding" my ASS off.(OK, that's funny) I have coded two BMWs so far with no regrets, or dealer issues as well. There are numerous other coding options that you may want to consider as well...all the warnings come to mind. There is another thing not mentioned yet....wear and tear on the starter. The whole ASS "feature?" is about fuel consumption numbers, and environmental. I was told by a BMW mechanic several years ago, that he recommends turning it off....savings not worth the benefit. I'll find other ways to reduce my carbon footprint, thank you.

My 2 cents.

I know people turn it off due to impacts on driving, but I don't think the mechanic was right about any additional repair risk due to using the feature. The starter motor and etc are upgraded and redesigned to handle the additional work. On my last car a '14 MB C300 I put over 90K miles on and did a fair bit of city and stop and go traffic where my ASS was almost never disabled I didn't have any issues. I also don't hear about starter motor failures in those cars and they are considered extremely reliable.

Funny you mentioned this, yesterday I was really paying attention to ASS system in my 2019 540ix and was trying to figure out if I can be happy not having the option to shut it off.

My only real issue with it is that once the engine shuts off a few seconds later the car goes into 1/2 mode on the AC ... it is really noticeable ... I tried setting the 'Auto' for the Hvac system mode to a higher setting figuring when it goes to half mode it would still be on a higher than my normal setting ... it was not a great solution.

I then shifted the shifter into sports mode as you mentioned at a light and said to myself do I want to do this at every light ... not really but I guess I could

Big picture is if they could implement their new system and keep the AC and Heating at the same level I would have no issue with it but according to one of the posters here it still lowers when the engine is off.

Is it possible they put the ability to turn it off in one of the idrive menu's ?

I need to figure this out being my lease is up in a few months and I wanted to order another 5 series.

There are MY2021 cars starting to slide into dealerships. I would go test drive one and see what you can figure out...

My feeling is it is a lot like my 530e where the AC is running off the hybrid system so it doesn't need to drop out when the engine shuts off. For my 530e it drops off to the Hybrid system and AC runs from there and when it gets too weak to do that the car turns back on even at a top and runs it from there. I'm never fiddling with the settings to wrestle with it (even though ASS isn't something I can control on the 530e).

I am going to talk to my salesman and see when one is available to test drive, I have a service appointment next week so hopefully they have one in to test drive.

I did the try and wait method to see when my engine would kick on again but while it did happen it felt a little too late but that is probably me being I like having my AC cold .... to give you an idea I keep my house at 66 degrees at night.

Yeah I am the same. I could definitely feel the AC reduction in my '14 MB C300 w/ ASS. I left it on anyway unless it was an extremely hot day with the sun high in the sky and the car shoots up 5 degrees two seconds after it stops. I don't have that reality in my 530e. It seems to kick on the engine, if needed, fairly quickly.

I can't speak for the MY2021 with any definitive voice. But I feel they probably took the AC unit from the 530e and moved it from the engine onto the 48V hybrid system so you're similarly as comfortable in a ASS scenario.

But hopefully you can let me know how it is once you test it out

Good tip! Thanks.

I just ordered to the OBDLink MX+ from Amazon to be able to use Bimmercode on my iPhone. It should be delivered tomorrow via Prime.

Anyone who has experience with thew new 48V system on 2021 540 and pre/post LCI 530e? If the Auto start/stop is as good as real hybrid, I don't think I'll ever bother to turn it off

Logical: does your car do ASS? My 2018 530e does not. It will always creep along if my foot isn't on the brake or the auto break is not on. Do the 2020 530es do ASS?
