Might be a silly question, but if I want to switch from comfort mode to sport mode by shifting the gear to the left (putting it in manual), is this doable?

I also have BimmerCode if it helps.

Only way to switch mode is the mode switch

I believe people have code what the default mode is at startup if maybe that helps!

My hand is always on the shifter, and thought it would be more efficient than looking down at the button. Still getting used to it…

I am the same and I agree, that would be nice to have as an option. This is how we put all the older BMW's into sport mode, my E39 works this way. That said, Sport Mode on my 2003 E39 is nothing like Sport Plus on my G30.

You could still shift up and down with the shifter. It's just the sideways motion that you are trying to program.

Thinking about it the only thing I can think is different from say the e39 and the g30 in this respect is that on the e39 it put the car into 1st gear when at a standstill as opposed to always starting in 2nd gear whereas I don't think that happens on the g30(?)

So it just hangs onto the gears for longer

The e39 would be intelligent about manual gear changes and not let you do something silly that would break the car like overrev or choose too lower gear

I see your desire about doing this as it's also easy to move the gear over without looking where as selecting the mode switch I still have to look rather than feel.

Perhaps there is too much choice these days and if bmw didn't offer all these modes I'm sure people would complain as competitors do!

I also don't like the feedback from manually changing gears with the gear stick on the g30 , the e39 was way much better.

But that is only controlling manual mode. Not the 'Auto' Sport function.

I see what you are after with the shifter, but you would also need another switchable function, to enable normal sport transmission programming and the full M/S auto function. (Unless you are willing to lose the two distinct transmission levels). Sport mode transmission/drivetrain and M/S shifter position do not give the same transmission programming.

You really need an 'additional' toggle switch on the top of the shifter for the modes.

What features of the sport mode is it that you want when you do this?

The driving experience buttons by default will affect the drive train and chassis (if you haven't done any individualizing to only have one or the other and not both chassis and drive train sport settings engaged).

The gear shift lever (when pushed to the left into the M/S gate) will affect the drive train (transmission shift modality) if left alone or goes into manual shifting.

If you are in comfort mode...and you desire for a sportier shift pattern to get ahead in traffic or coming on to an on-ramp...do you really need the suspension (chassis) features...or will the drive train (transmission) changes be all you need?

Having the driver experience buttons and their configurations...and having the M/S shift gate for the gear shift lever...gives more options. Having the lever do the same thing as the buttons just gives redundancy.

The M/S shift gate gives you a quick way to go into a sportier/more aggressive shift pattern...then go back to normal shift pattern...or go into manual mode...then back to auto shift mode.

The driving experience buttons give you an opportunity to individualize how not only the transmission shifts but if you want the suspension envolved. These selections are usually selected for a default setting or long term driving sessions setting instead of a "quick" change.

Just some thoughts.

I like all the sport mode features activated (sound, steering, suspension). So if I wanted to change to sport on the highway or downshift into a turn, it would be a quick shift (or few).

It's not a big deal, I wasn't sure if this question was asked before. In general I like the sport automatic transmission (too many gears for manual all the time).
