I'll add my experiences installing for others:

- Remove ten 8mm screws. Eight of them hold down the bottom plate which falls right down after removal of the eight screws.
- the final two screws are on the corner edge holding down the OEM diffuser.
- removal of the OEM diffuser required the use of a vinyl hook tool. Insert along the top edge and pry up and it pops out. A lot easier than pulling hard and possibly damaging it.
- the bottom edge of the stock diffuser has three or four tabs and once the top is disconnected it's easy to push on the inside of the clip and pop it out.
- I started left to right, popping in the outer edge and then working my way across the top edge popping in the clips and then down and around the right edge. I'd say my gap is equal on both sides, and the gap is fine.
- Mine only had seven holes for securing and two do not line up. These are the two in the middle of the bottom where the screw would go through two pieces of the diffuser and then into the body, but they don't line up, don't waste too much time trying to get it to line up like I did.
- there are three holes alone the front edge that line up perfect, one of my holes was covered by a paint bubble, I drilled it out.
- the two corner holes secure the bottom edge of the diffuser that goes under the tips and then through the main piece and into the body.

Hope this helps.

I know this will be easy to figure out once I remove the stock one and check things out, but the holes that are stacked, does the screw pass through all three of these and then into the body or does the underbody somehow wedge between one of the layers? I'm probably being confusing. I guess an easier way to ask is, does the screw pass through all the diffuser holes and then into the body?
cant recall since im out in finland admiring all the tourings

but the stacked holes did not line up for me either so no screws in there.

looks good!
no paint flaws?

Saw your post and pulled the trigger on the same rear diffuser. Turned out amazing on my 2022 M550! Thanks for the guidance!!

One concern I have is when I took it for a spin after the install I noticed the bottom part of the diffuser near both exhausts was hot to touch, have you had any issues with paint fading or plastic melting due to the exhaust heat?

I have this diffuser and it has warped underneath. Hard to see unless you are looking at it from the right angle. I do have an aftermarket exhaust- so that may play a factor in it.

Damn, is it near the exhaust tips or more so toward the bottom middle of the diffuser?

Do you have an idea of what it was? Maybe heat, constant wind, tight screws, etc.

It's directly in the middle underneath. I'll snap a picture a little later. Around the tips it looks fine still.

Sorry catching up on posts.

I have not noticed any issues with my diffuser in terms of heat from the tips or warping. I'll have a closer look today though to make sure.

It's looks great BTW! Compliments the spoiler nicely. Is that a CS or a Pro?

Went ahead and purchased a cheap m5 style diffuser off ebay to see how it would look with the shark fins. As previous posts mention, the stock exhaust tips do not fit on most of these. I have no dremel skills, but was able to extend the clearance for a semi stock look. I have not done a final sand on the edges yet. Took about 30 minutes and it fit perfectly. Only thing I'm not sure of is vertical reflectors. I will probably just black them out.

In case you’re still around, any tips on dremel technique? I’ve got some experience but mostly with metal.

I’ve agonized over the diffuser for months- ultimately I want exactly this look, so cutting is what it’s going to have to be.

Caveat emptor for folks looking for m550 diffusers on eBay, there are tons of them that incorrectly state they fit m550’s. They do not without modification. Only the exact design that Joe and the rest in this thread have does, which specifically calls out a 10” gap for the exhaust.

Exhaust tips mod

Interested in modifying my exhaust tips. Anyone have any idea if the OEM exhaust tip are easy to replace?

Want to put these on, would the OEM ones need to be cut off and these new ones welded on?

Does changing only exhaust tips modify the sound in any way? Bc I like the way it sounds now and do not want to change it.

Not well versed in exhaust system mods so if anyone can enlighten me, the help would me much appreciated!

It is almost impossible to change the tips on an M550. They are welded onto the axle-back, all one piece. They cut back in at such a sharp angle going into the muffler that it is impossible to chop and weld new ones on. Most shops won't even touch it. A few people here have got a shop to do it, but IMO, they stick out way too far. Tips do not affect sound.

I literally installed my Dinan full catback just for the quad tips and the look.

Thank you. Every time I walk up from the back of the car, I have no regrets in all the money I spent on the exhaust, tails, diffuser and CF spoiler.

It looks like BMW makes their own version of this exhasut.. yours is the cheaper knock off.. but BMW makes a carbon fiber versions.. it’s $1500..but i wonder if this would be cleaner looking / and no warping issues?

Here is a pic I found of it on a white car. Looks very nice..

I have seen hardly ANY photos of this diffuser on cars.. but I like the look of this one painted in body color and then just the carbon section on the bottom.

My car is med blue… and i have the small OEM carbon trunk spoiler..this might look good…

I’m not sure how this diffuser would look iwth aftermarket exhaust….

Finally got the diffuser referenced in the original post fitted. I prefer this “m5 knockoff” look and am quite pleased with how it turned out. I took it very slow, spending a few hours split over several days to dremel it down. Used the ez476 cutting wheel. Still is very sloppy if you get close enough.
