I am having trouble finding a dealer willing to discount a M550i. I’ve talked with a few that have some in stock (including some that have provided aggressive discounts on other models I have purchased from them) and none are willing to budge from MSRP (though I will qualify for the $2,500 loyalty credit now).

I know MSRP (or higher) is standard for Porsche, but this seems new for BMW. Should I keep looking? Or is MSRP for a lot M550i the best I am going to find now?

Which state are you in if you are in the US? I can tell you my dealer who gave me a good deal. It was last year though, so I don't know if the same will apply to this years cars.

I just read an article where analysts are expecting Massive used and new car sales Summer 2022. The chip shortage will be resolved by then (supposedly) and the market will swing heavily to the consumer vs dealer.

Nope. Chip shortage will be over by 2023. With a very slight chance by the end of 2022. But expect middle of 2023.

Estimates on when chip supply will meet demand vary widely and it’s very difficult to predict where prices settle at even after that happens.

There are so many variables. Just last week, major floods shut down chip production in Malaysia. A magnesium shortage is also feared. The industry may run less “lean” (e.g. JIT) going forward and that cost will have to be passed on. MSRP could rise significantly so even if you get a “discount” later, you may not be any better off.

I personally wouldn’t try to time this market, and just buy a car whenever I need it. Sometimes you just have to take what the market offers.

I concur that any guess as to when the chip shortages will be over is just that, a guess. Chip is a pretty generic term, and there are literally thousands of them out there, but BMW only uses a few specific ones.

As for the OP's dilemma, I'm in the same boat. Trying to find a car and pay MSRP or less. I can get a discount from my local dealer on an order, but he still doesn't have an allocation. I can save $3K in June, or pay retail today. Grrrr.

An offer on less than MSRP but no allocation? Lol of course dealer can offer good price on something they don't have.

Honestly I was expecting the dealer to put a premium on my M550 with Individual paintwork and was then pleasantly surprised when they didn't.

My father custom ordered an AMG E63S Touring back in April and the dealer put a $10k premium on top. Rationale for this, which I actually understand, is that he could literally drive that car off the lot and sell it for $30k over MSRP because it is so rare to begin with, and Mercedes-AMG halted production on all 2022 V8s just two days after his car started its build. They want a piece of that value.

Personally I wouldn't think any premium should be placed on a BMW that isn't Individual spec. It might take a bit of legwork but you can conceivably go find another car with standard options elsewhere.

my local dealer wanted 10k over sticker for the M550 they had or 5k over to order, when I threatened to go elsewhere they went to MSRP. I went to 4 dealers and ended up getting a very good deal for my trade but it took some negotiation on my part so even though I paid msrp I feel like I got about 4K more then i would have on the trade because the used market is smoking.
