Switching between car play and BMW Idrive

Is there a quick way to switch off car play other than going through the COM menu, highliting your phone and then switching back to Idrive?

In addition, I like the BMW navigation because it shows in the HUD but also like Waze for the information it gives regarding police. The only workaround I have found is to use Idrive but have my phone plugged in and connected to Waze then I can hear any alerts.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

What MY do you have? I only ask as I only have experience with iDrive 7.

You are only able to turn CarPlay off in the COM menu, but you can use the BMW icon on the CarPlay Home Screen to to back to iDrive. Once you are in iDrive you can set BMW navigation and get HUD and etc and flip back to CarPlay. You can then activate WAZE. And get both. IDrive won’t let you set navigation if it is running in CarPlay first.

Great, so my iDrive 7 information applies to you.

You can also jump back to iDrive with the Menu button on the iDrive Controller as well.

I tried doing what u suggested but after activating waze when I tried to go back to the BMW navigation it stated “navigation is activated through CarPlay”. I am doing something wrong?

Waze will only display through CarPlay. If you end your Waze navigation (cancel the route), it will let you go to BMW navigation.

You'd have to start navigation in iDrive first and then Waze. The order is important as iDrive won't cancel navigation it has in progress, but it won't let you activate it if it is already active when you open it.

So select BMW connection, start navigation, then switch to carplay, activate navigation in waze?

You can actually get _all three_ navigations working simultaneously, getting the best of all worlds:
- Navigation guidance from BMW navi that will show on the Instrument Cluster and HUD.
- Google Maps in Car Play to show 3D satellite map in Carplay.
- Waze in Carplay to give you alerts, like police radar, etc…

It’s a bit cumbersome to get all this working, as it requires an exact sequence to start up the apps, as described above.

The best way toggle between Apple Carplay and iDrive is to use the buttons around the idrive controller. The menu button is your best bet. Media and NAV (if you have a Map running or Waze) will return you to Apple Carplay. I could have sworn Apple Carplay and Maps turn by turn has been added to HUD in ID7? This is my biggest complaint about ID6 and Maps, no HUD.

Apple Carplay integration is definitely clunky, but I like it. I am fine with Maps. I have yet to use the Navigation in this car, Maps is easier. I have not used the built in Navigation in any of my cars in 10 years. The phone is better and easier to use.

It does show in the HUD in iDrive 7 via CarPlay, but only in the "turn by turn card" style. I think in iDrive 8 it will put the actual map in the HUD similar to what BMW Navigation does.

What is unknown, at least to me, at this point is if that iDrive 8 functionality is a CarPlay update on iOS side or something BMW could enable on iDrive 7 in a future release.

Ah, got it. I would even take the turn by turn card in HUD. Honestly, HUD is pretty much useless in ID6 without nav guidance in HUD. I don't really need the speed I am going on my windshield or check control messages their either. What I want is to not take my eyes off the road by having to look at the screen.

Help

OK, what am I doing wrong.
Start the car and because I have my phone on me it automatically connects CarPlay. I then go into COM and change the connection to BMW. I then start the BMW navigation. I then change the connection to CarPlay, start the navigation in Waze. Doing this disables the BMW navigation. How can I run both as explained earlier in this thread? Help!

Mine doesn't show any cards when I use navigation other than the built-in BMW one. Does it require coding or an update?

You neee at least the July 2020 update to see the navigation cards in the HUD if you have iDrive 7.

Not the case with Apple Car Play but Android Auto turn by turn has been added to HUD in ID7. It works in our X3 M40 with ID7 but not the M550 with ID6

If you use Carplay, only Apple Maps will display turn-by-turn prompts in the instrument cluster and HUD. Google Maps and Waze won't, don't know if this is some Apple-style-bullcrap limitation or not.

Most likely. Apple writes the integration coding and their apps. Seems logical to me that they would hoard HUD turn by turn, it's basically their interface. I'm not even sure they have to pass Waze along to CarPlay f they didn't want to.

It is ingenious though. My girlfriend is a big Waze user. I am all Apple Maps. She hates Maps, I hate Waze.

I just bought her a 2021 ID7 X5 and although she loves Waze, she switched to Maps for the HUD functionality and overall better integration.

I accomplish the arrangement the OP asked about by using BMW nav for the killer HUD integration, then just turn waze on as I drive, but without a route programmed into wayz. I still get warned for hazards and police.
