Was talking to a guy the other day in a 2020 M5. We chatted about our cars, then he told me that Spring of 2021 he got busted doing 115 by a State Trooper. He said he was actually going faster than that.

In NH, as of 2014, anything over 100 mph is automatic "Reckless Driving". That gets you minimum fine of $500 and mandatory loss of license for 60 days.

This guy was actually from MA. He had to pay $800, lost his license for 2 months and was dropped by Geico.

Not sure how many other States are doing this, but heads up to check your State law.

PA it is 35MPH above the posted limit.

Last time I got pulled over exceeding 100MPH was in upstate NY. Thankfully the traffic gods were smiling on me and I got a warning. Even though the trooper noted it took him doing 130+ to catch up to me.

In Arizona, 20 miles over the limit changes the offense from civil to criminal. Cops will often use this to quiet down the driver ("I clocked you at 30 miles over the speed limit but I will record it lower so it won't be a criminal offense for you").

I have only gone over 100 twice. Both times it was on a narrow country road with 65 MPH speed limits and a steep hill with a passing lane on the uphill side). I needed to get past a slow driver on the hill before we settled back into the two lane road. But I immediately slowed down so that when I crested the hill, I wasn't going so fast. Incidentally, the BMW felt like it was going 60.

I got pulled over in MD by a county cop, in my previous 14 550i, doing 105 in a 55. I was heading to the airport but for some reason "I'm heading to the hospital" just came out of my mouth. My FIL was really sick at the time and I was going to the hospital alot, so maybe that's why it just came out. Anyway, he THANKFULLY gave me a warning and told me to slow down so people wouldn't potentially have to visit me at the hospital . I was alone, but he did see the two carseats in the back, maybe that helped... who knows.

All I know is these cars hit triple digits without any effort. had to set a speed warning thru the idrive at 95mph, just to keep me grounded.

Yeah. The crappy old cars from the sixties through the end of the century would start to shake and rattle as you sped up. Not current BMWs. It is too easy to go fast in a BMW so I use the ACC a lot.

In British Columbia, Canada, they can impound your car when caught "excessive speeding", which is 40kph over the limit (that is 140kph or 87mpg on freeways).
7 days for first offense
30 days for second offense
60 days for third offense
If proven you were "racing" against another car or fellow driver, they can enforce civil forfeiture and auction your car.

The same is true for ON as well. I believe it may be a Canada wide thing. As they have signs all over the highway about it.

That being said, when driving in the GTA I see a LOT of cars doing well above those speeds...

I try not to join in though. Not trying to find out what the risk is for an American traveling there compared to a native

That's an excellent idea.

Speeding to the hospital story: My brother (RIP) was having a heart attack in rural Nebraska. His buddy was driving him to the hospital in his truck at warp 9. Cop pulls them over, hears the story, sees my brother, and lets them go. However, cop swung by the hospital to double check about 15 minutes after they arrived. I was kinda mad he didn't escort them there, but whatever as he was ok after being airlifted to Denver. He fully recovered. Cancer finally took him 5 years ago.

Similar in Australia.
30km/h above is 3 months loss and $1500 fine.
45km/h above is 6 months and $3800 fine.

You lose demerit points as well.

And as per Canada if racing you can lose your car.

I have the speed alarm set at 95 as well. Way too easy to hit 100 in these cars without realizing it.

Similar story here, my ex-wife was in labor and we were speeding to the hospital in commute hour traffic on the highway. I was weaving in and out trying to get an edge. Cop pulls me over, hears my story and sees the pregnant wife, asks me if we want an ambulance called, I say no, but can you get in front of me and cut a path in this traffic, he says, "I can't do that". I assume there is liability involved.

Regarding the speed warning, I personally don't need this as HUD is right in my face. If I decide to go 100mph, it is with intent and I know I am doing it. That said, it is funny that I have a tune and 155mph capabilities because of the Summer tire set-up and I rarely drive "fast". Well, I definitely will do 90-95mph in a 75mph zone (i95 Mark MA to ME @HerkHealer), but it just is not worth getting some cop throw the book at you and hit you with driving to endanger which is a criminal offense here.

I enjoy the power of the car from zero more than top speed. It does ride nice though at high speeds.

I have the view that as long as you can stop in the distance you can see to be clear that should be safe ( that argument works at any speed)

Speed limits always "feel" slight too slow for a given road but they have be set somewhere.

For me living in London my only real opportunity have fun is to accelerate on to a motorway but that fun is over in a matter of seconds. I have a 540 and even that gets up to 70 in no time

Motorways here in the U.K. probably fair to say most people drive around 80mph which I feel is reasonable. Anything more than and you attract attention

The days of fundrivijg here in the U.K. are being chipped away with speed bumps, 20mph limits in towns, speed cameras, average speed cameras, and even some areas now not wanting ICE cars at all. Tax going up on IcE cars as well.
This year priority to pedestrians now . Governments and councils really don't want us to drive cars anymore.

Personally I think we've already had the best days for car ownership

Yeah, i work in federal Law enforcement, not NYS but i can tell you that in NY, over 100 is likely to get you arrested. double the speed limit is guaranteed.

younger cops around NYS tend to be more relaxed with this actually, mostly because there's a lot that are car enthusiasts themselves.

NYC is another issue, no one upstate takes ownership of that dumpster fire lol.

I was on a highway driving a few days ago. Four lanes plus a HOV lane. I am in the second from the right lane with my ACC set for 77 (speed limit is 65). I am being passed by many, many cars with some of them flying by me going at least 95 and maybe in excess of 100; and this is during the day with lots of traffic. A fatal accident waiting to happen.

Like others I find the car can be deceptive. Roll into in eco-pro mode at 100km/h and next second it’s at 160km/h or more, especially as it’s so quiet. Rule I sort of have is to put it in sports+ so I can hear the exhaust and it makes me more aware of the speed. Another trick is to put a roof box on like we have on our current vacation drive, the wind noise of that increases dramatically about 110km/h and gets louder the faster you go.

I was stationed at Davis Monthan AFB from 1991-2003 (longgg time for Military)

Remember the highway between Tucson and Pheonix was 75MPH back then. Did they drop the speed limit? Back then EVERYONE was doing 90 MPH on that road. It was literally super straight, no hills and completely wide open for ever.

Just imagine the condition of some of those cars going those speeds.....

Not to mention impairment from over the counter meds, prescription meds, alcohol and or even distractions from cell phones, coffee, make-up. Its a wonder more people don't die on our highways.

My parents (RIP) lived in Green Valley, AZ. I'm all too familiar with that drive. Definitely a "quick" pace.

I believe the speed limit is still 75 but only once you get outside both urban centers. Inside the greater Phoenix area, most highways are 65 with some 55 (on at least one when they added a lane they narrowed the lanes and apparently that caused them to drop the speed limit to 55).

So I googled the Florida laws which states:

"Driving over 100 mph is a felony in Florida. If you go above 50 mph above the speed limit, that is already considered a felony. At 30 or more miles per hour over the posted limit, the act of speeding becomes criminal. Going 30 to 49 mph over the posted limit is a misdemeanor."

I recommend everyone to go to the track to get it out of your system. An example of what can happen speeding is this teenager who was racing, accidentally running over a mother & baby, and sentenced to 24years:
