Do you want an allocation to order one, or do you want to just find one on the lot?

You can get most dealers to msrp in a minute and I negotiated my trade by going to multiple dealers and working on the best offer w the dealer I ultimately used, saved me thousands.

I did the same. In fact one dealer was calling me while I was on a test drive with another, which helped me land my deal. You have to shop around now more than ever and make the dealers work for you. I saved few thousand bucks, which is by no means a pre pandemic deal, but in the current environment, I felt satisfied. I ordered early December and hope to see my car sometime late February.

I cant stand car dealership managers. The sales people are generally nice but then they bring in the manager to try and gouge you. They are easily manipulated though as they dont tend to be the brightest bulbs on the tree. This is the first time I ever paid anything close to MSRP but I needed a car and didnt want to wait for the lots to get filled up again. I did get a great number on my trade because used car market is hot

I actually understand the dealers. Look at their inventory levels. Our local guys have 20-30 new cars on their lots instead of the usual 150-200. They still have to pay salaries and try not to lay employees off. So its understandable they won't discount cars and do everything possible to make up for the lost revenue. I am actually surprised that not all of them mark their units up...

Try this:

Inventories are down, so there's less expensive in paying for all of those cars to sit there.

Around half the salaries there are for commission salespeople, so that doesn't hurt the dealer if they make less.

Nearly half of the remaining salaries are for service folks, and that business hasn't slowed down since last year when most of us had returned to the office and needed to get our cars fixed or maintained.

Granted, fixed costs to maintain the dealerships, taxes, utilities and overhead personnel did not change.

Sales are down, yes, but nearly every car that comes in is sold quickly, and I think actual production is around 80% of pre-pandemic levels. So really, sales are down 20% (if that number is correct).

So, sure, you have a valid point but I don't think it justifies $5K over MSRP markups that many dealers try to get.

I don’t know what the actual sales numbers are. What I think though is that salespeople also need to feed their families, even though they work on commission. So they have to make up for lost volume. Who knows what’s right and what’s wrong? These are unprecedented times. I had to factory order my 22 m550i and wait for 3 months until it gets here. Before I would just get a car from the lot….

That is an interesting point of view. I dont have alot of sympathy for car dealerships as so many of them are beyond dishonest especially the service departments but I do share your compassion for the sales people on the floor

OK, I actually did a little research. These are just USA numbers, but we can presume that other markets are similar.

These are the sales of BMW vehicles for each year:
2019: 324,825
2020: 280,297
2021: 336,694

So, yes, inventories are down and demand is up, but sales last year were not only up from the 2020 pandemic slowdown, but higher than 2019, in which IIRC we had no pandemic impact to our economy.

So, there goes all of the arguments justifying higher prices at the dealer to save those poor starving salespeople. You could make a case that they are trying to replenish their savings from a horrible 2019, but that's about it.

I'm losing my sympathy.

My take on high sales is that a lot of Merc, Land Rover and Even Lexus customers are switching over to BMW, because there are more cars in stock and less/0 added premiums over msrp. I personally had lots of those types of customers lately.
